Drivers seatback problem

Today the drivers seat back decided not to stay upright; it will stay up but if you lean on it, it falls back. It also will not fall forward to allow entry to the back seat. Basically, you can't safely drive it unless you support the seat back w/something on the rear seat to prevent the seat back from falling back. I'm guessing that the connection from the release lever has broken or whatever reclining adjustment bracket has broken? Has anyone had this problem or has an idea what part I should look to replace?

Re: Drivers seatback problem

If you are inclined and handy you may be able to take the seat apart and find what is broken. I would be inclined to find a replacement seat, any colour will do as you could swap your old seat covers onto the replacement.

Either way this may help

Re: Drivers seatback problem

My seats are in excellent condition since they have been covered w/sheepskin for 20 years and I have regularly applied a leather conditioner, so I don't think I could find a seat in the same condition. I'm not sure how the realease lever is attached but I think if I remove the hard plastic back cover, I can see what's involved. That link does a good job of explaining how to disassembly the seat, so I'll give it a try. If I didn't need to have the car inspected in NY, I'd just support the back until I had time to pull it out of the car.

Re: Drivers seatback problem

It's great that your covers are in excellent condition. That way you could get a cheap seat and swap your covers onto it.

Re: Drivers seatback problem

Your right, I could just swap the covers but by the time I strip down the seat, I might as well try to find the problem and try to replace the part (if available). To get the covers off, I need to disassemble the back shell, which is where I think I can find the problem since the power recline still functions but will not lock in place.

Coolio
If you fancy taking some good photos of the back cover removal to post up here while you do it that would be great, as one of the jobs i have to do is swap a torn backing for a good one i have on another seat.

Re: Drivers seatback problem

It will be a few days until I can tackle the problem. If you look at the link above, removing the back is described as a simple operation:Remove the lumbar lever/remove screw caps & screws on both sides. I have an LSi model w/electric seats, so In addition I need to remove the seat back release lever which is the problem area.
