O/T - world's fastest AWD car?
i just read about the new Gemballa tuned 911 turbo. it was a really cool article in the latest Excellence Magazine. this monster has 854 hp and 0-60 in the low 3sec range. i forget the top speed, but it might have been over 250mph. the reviewer said that when it hits 5000 rpm the acceleration is like a violent explosion, pressing you back in the seat like a rocket sled! at $262,000 its not cheap, but considering what a McLaren F1 costs, and how the Gemballa would embarrass it, its kind of a bargain. it is based on the 911 AWD turbo, but there is no mention of the AWD, so i wonder if it may be the fastest AWD vehicle around? is there an AWD car that's faster that i don't know about? bored minds want to know.

Boone,
The Apollo moon buggy is the fastest AWD vehicle on Luna not on Terra. I believe that a Rover is the fastest AWD vehicle on Mars. Now if we could just get NASA to design us a 7 trillion dollar , bullet proof auto transmission and sell it to us for about $2500. Heck, I'd buy two. This is a concept known as "Your tax dollars really at work." The SVXers outside the USA would get it cheaper. This is a concept known as foreign aid.

I wouldnt mind one for my third car I can just see $262,000 being given to me, yaa right
Would be a great car though, but look at touring racing audi is on top now as far as I have seen, and i like to go round the corners fast too. As far as the 911 turbo, I have seen the 6 cylinder rated at 500hp, and a rich guy in FL I knew had a V12 not sure on its specs though. |

Re: O/T - world's fastest AWD car?
Currently, it is that Topless Gemballa. It's official record is 217mph. The Blitz Skyline had a stab at that record on the Autobahn late last year and hit 214 (had to back off due to a broken p/s belt if I recall correctly...). The only other thing close (in stock form) is the Lamborghini Diablo 6.0 I believe.

fastest can mean a lot of things...
I think a Toyota Celica AWD still holds the Pikes Peak Hill climb record - 1000hp out of a 2-liter 4-banger. |

Here's an obscure one...
Lingenfelter Performance Engineering built a car in 1991 using the GM F-body and a higly modified LS-6 motor. Using four turbos and alcohol, they were able to get 1200hp from the engine. The car used a FOUR WHEEL drive system (50/50 split), and reached a top speed, in the bonneville salt flats, of 301 mph. The story used to be on the Lingenfelter website, but i just went there to get the link, and they have redesigned the site, and removed the history section. If anyone finds it, please let me know, i want to copy it. The car was called the Sledgehammer Firehawk. |

Fastest AWD
Someone check me on this, but if memory serves me the two fastest non-jet cars at Bonneville were AWD.
Mickey Thompson's "Challenger" had four blown Pontiac engines, which I THINK drove front and rear. The Summers Brothers "Goldenrod" used 4 injected Hemis, and I am pretty sure two drove the front wheels and two drove the back. Both of these cars broke 400 mph. Don

How about the new Bugatti Veyron. That has 1001 hp and all wheel drive. I think I have heard 0-185mph in around 14 seconds. That seems pretty decent.

All this talk reminds me of the time my cousin Darryl & my other cousin Darryl dropped a blowed, bored & stroked Mopar hemi block into their AMC AWD hornet wagon, & floored it goin' down I-95 after midnight back in '85. When they found the remnants of the car in the James river, the cops swore the custom speedo was stuck at 250 mph!
I ain't heard from either Darryl since then, so I can't verify the story. No web info on this feat either. Sorry, Ron.
