Puzzled”?” Water

I have discovered some form of water that was sitting where the spare tire is housed. The soundproofing seems water logged. I do not know how water was acquired. Has this happened to anyone else?

I know it sounds silly but, I put some cedar chips to help absorb the moisture that is underneath the soundproofing. I imagine this has been this way for a while. I just replaced all of the tail lights in the rear and noticed this. I aim to preserve my pearlie and just would like to know what everyone recommends to do as well as has this happened to anyone else? What do you suppose it came from? Nothing else appears to have leaked water. Could it be possible it’s some form condensation of some sort?

I had the same problem when i bought mine it was the right tail light. i fixed it by removing all tail lights (just to be safe) and put weatherstripping adheasive onto the gasket on both sides and stuck it to the car.

If you just replaced the tail lights, you may have tightened the fasteners too tight. If you do that, the gaskets will leak.

alot of members have experienced water in the trunk. Most likely culprit is like everyone else said the tail light gasket

Okay, so then a water hose check will need to be done. Thanks everyone!

I just replaced them, will find out how things work after the water hose check.

After replacing my tail light gaskets with new ones, I tightened the lights up snugly, but not too tight. If you tighten them too much, the edges cut through the gasket like a cookie cutter.

As a further protection against water leakage or tail light condensation, I ran a very thin bead of RTV silicone in the gap where the black part of the tail light assembly meets the body. Run it along the entire horizontal surface and down along the side (about 3/4 of the way).

This way, water in the trunk channel just flows over it and outside, as compared to flowing into the gap and collecting.

To test it, you can also just cover this gap with electrical tape instead of the silicone. Either way, everything is hidden when the trunk is closed.

Thanks, I will mention this to my husband.

What does everyone think I should do with the soundproofing? It appears to be very complex to even attempt to get that off. I am not certain how to ensure the fact that everything is dry unless this was up. Does anyone have any suggestions on this? It is raining here now. I will attempt to check everything on Thursday while I get the cedar chips out. I am so worried this may be bigger then what I want to work with now.

My husband just two toned the calipers. I have new slotted rotors from Motor Sport. I have new rear rotors and brakes. I installed a better set of taillights and will install the headlights and water fall shortly. I have a place in mind for body work like new skins on the doors. (This will not happen until next fall hopefully.) I have a serious oil leak in this car. So much going for it, yet this just bothers me, as I had not planned on something else to add to the list.

If you check where the donut spare is located, underneath there are two rubber bungs or plugs covering holes in the metalwork. Remove these plugs and keep them safe. The holes uncovered will allow water to escape from the spare wheel well. If you leave them off for a while they may also allow some heat from the exhaust silencer to enter and dry the area. The exhaust gas goes out the back from the two pipes, so it is quite safe in that regard.

Next, you should leave the bootlid open in dry sunny weather with the open trunk [I forgot you call it trunk] facing the sun. This will dry it out completely. One thing to remember is the trunk light. Remove the bulb while doing this, otherwise the long timespan with the bulb lighting may drain the battery.

This works very well to totally dry the area.

Joe

[And yes, the water was getting into mine via the light gaskets as well.]

You don't have to remove the trunk bulb...just unplug it's harness connector

Yes, thanks, same thing. Once it stops the current drain, whatever turns you on.

Or off, as the case might be
