And if the same % of cars are wrecked by non members as members, there have been lots that have been totaled over the last 5 years or so. It is surprising to me how many have been wiped out over the years around here.

I suspect they're gaining in polularity with younger owners becasue they're ridiculously cheap, and fear economics will decimate the ranks in the immediate future. Those that don't end up wrapped around a tree will soon break and be parted-out becasue the cost of repairs will exceed their "market" value.

I saw my beloved '68 Mustang twice after I sold it: Once in a parking lot, some kid sitting there mindlessly blipping the throttle (I wanted to snatch the keys away from him), and again, not long afterward, sitting behind a local business, front clip mangled from a major collision. So it goes.

Part of the problem is that the cars look so good, but are so cheap. The younger rice group find them very attractive because they look fast, but abuse them and the tranny and then have problems in a very short time.

You know, in my not-so-scientific opinion here, I'd say the 9-10K mark is about right on US roads. They are certainly becoming rarer. Here in the midwest, even while they were rare I could count on seeing one SVX at least every other week. Nowadays... the only SVX I see is mine. At least when it's not in the shop

I'd also say it's accurate to say that there are probably 5-6 cars every month that are lost... far more than the number that are actually getting back on the road.

Like the Delorean community, I feel that in about 5 years (15 years after production end) we'll be at about 50% (or about 7500) on the road... and there it'll stabilize. Now, when I say "on the road" I actually mean "able to be driven"... not necessarily "driven every day". That number will be a lot lower... maybe 30%... maybe less depending on how well SVXi survive the next couple of years.

I have a friend who's a real big DMC fan... he has two. I've driven one of them, and they're sweet cars (though extremely dated). He reckons that today... some 24 years after the last model year of production there are maybe less than 30% roadworthy... with less than 10% being frequently driven. However, they have become more collectible in recent years, so their value is in fact rising.

Is this what the future of the SVX will hold? Maybe, maybe not. The number produced and the similarity of the fanbase (in terms of income and personality types... the only place they really differ is in age) lead me to believe that the SVX is following an extremely similar pattern. The DMC gained much more value much more quickly due to "star value" (ref: BTTF) but still their value really spiked shortly after the release of the second movie and stayed relatively stagnant since when considering inflation. SVX never had this "boost", but I see the numbers of driveable cars following extremely similar numbers. In fact, the SVX numbers may be lower because they don't have the "coolness factor" provided by Hollywood.

In short? The SVX probably won't be a collectors car. In a few years we'll hit 50% of the total number imported actually roadworthy. At that point, the fans and collectors will actually represent the majority of owners (as happened with the DMC), and then the attrition will decrease. However, as much as we might want to the cars won't run forever... and neither will parts be available forever.

I've actually seen a Delorean here in my town, but never another SVX.

I dunno... My import hatin' dad told me that I should have kept the Legacy and restored the SVX for use as a summer car... Maybe there's more hope for their survival than we think?

What we need is a big budget movie that uses an SVX as a time machine, the SVX is every bit as reliable as a DMC-12, probably more...

Is anyone friends with Spielberg?

LOL man as far as I recall the DeLorean was notoriously unreliable hence DMC going bankrupt, aside some scandal.

Hiya,

There were less than 1700 JDM VL specs (4ws) made between 91 & late 94.

With the new car market in Japan being so agressive many never saw 6 years old & were scrapped, the 1's that did survive were mainly kept as 2nd cars or by collectors.
A few have made there way to the UK (5 I know of) and maybe 25 to 30 went too the Russia in the past 3 years and around 15 to Oz and NZ.

There are probaby less than 250 left world wide and they have already become a collectors item in Japan and changing hands for serious money, give you an idea, I could send mine back to Japan & including shipping etc could almost double my money since buying the car there last October.

Darren.

That is the situation in a nutshell. Prices for the SVX are at rock-bottom now, very affordable cars for a young buyer that doesn't give a hoot about keeping it forever in a pristine state or restoring it, they just want to go fast for cheap in a unique car. And yeah it's cool and all, but they're already looking ahead to something else. That's the way it goes I guess.

I don't know how many total left...

Perhaps someone can give the head of DMVs from state to state the phone calls to find out the closer number of SVXi on the roads......

you would either you'd have to:

A) have a friend in high places (in every DMV in the 48 states) to determine how many SVXi are actually registered and on the road to get a good idea of how many are actually left.

B) Get a carfax account and methodically run the VIN#'s for all 15k cars imported to America

C) Estimate the rate of vehicular attrition and the ones we see for sale/scrapped every day on ebay and the like - about = 7-9,000 left

I know three running SVXi here in Ottawa, and I found one at a junk yard today (first junked one I've ever seen. I wanted to cry ). So by casual observation I've seen 1 in 4 out of action. A hell of a rough estimate though.

You guys need to be more positive! I am a "younger folk" I guess at 23 and I have 2 black pearl 96 SVX LSi's My dad "totalled" one according to insurance. I kept it as a parts car for when i bought my second. There is no frame damage and if that car has to sit wrecked for 10 years before I fix it then so be it. I fully understand and the beauty of the car and will do anything and everything to preserve it. I keep my car in top shape, but only OEM parts and the only reason I don't have any mods is because I'm new to hearing about modded SVXs and would rather wait to see how the mods screw up everyone elses car before I try somethingon my own and are sorry for it later. SVX prices currently being so rock bottom is not a bad thing. That just means that the few enthusiasts who know how special these cars are can also afford more of them. We have to snag them up before all the teenage ricerocket wannabes do. **** I was going to buy another SVX last week and the only thing that changed my mind was the fact that I'm moving to Hawaii next month and the gov. will only pay to ship one vehicle. I've searched high and low and as far as I know I will be the second SVX on Oahu. There is aguy with a 2 tone black and white pearl. I plan on buying it if I can ever talk him into selling it...we'll see! Anyways like I said stay positive! Cause all us youngins aren't so bad afterall!!!
