Started getting a brief sqeal if I turned the ac on before the car was completely warmed up, sometimes accompanied by a brief grind or thunk. Started right after my 180k service. Got the belts readjusted a couple of times, my mechanic says the compressor is also making a mild unhappy noise.

That does not sound good. I had smoke comin out from under the hood and heard a baaaaaaad noise as well.

there was a guy selling rebuilt compressors on ebay last i looked, for less than $500. let me see if i can find it and post (didnt end up buying as the belt was off -well- there was more to it than that, but i didnt need a compressor)
