pissed off

i'm pissed and i guess this is the forum to vent....
my svx got towed by the city of chicago....
they towed it because it was 'abandoned'
i left the car with a buddy of mine for the summer because i am working in dc for the summer. my buddy starts up the car every couple of days and moves the car up and down the block.
when i called the impound today, they told me that according to the record, they noted the car was at one spot on day 1, then on day 5 the car was again at the same spot, and so by day 12 when the car is again at that spot, they towed it.... but what if the car was at different spots days 2,3,4,6,7,8,9,10 and 11?

so now i need to figure a way to rescue this car ( i was going to sell it as soon as i get back to the midwest on ebay.... argh) the lady at the impound told me that they're charging me 35 bucks a day for storing the car.... and i owe them like 400 some already... wtf... and my friends can't pick up the car for me because the title/registration is not in chicago, but at my folk's place in cali....

if anyone knows anyone at dep of streets and sanitation, or knows of a way to talk some sense into these city employees... let me know... or else i'm on the verge of giving y'all a great deal.... (i might just give up the darn car and they they're going to sell it as scrap)

subafan,
Can your friend who has been moving it go down the talk directly with the impound folks? He must have some "nice" neighbors, as one of them must have called the car in in order for it to have been towed..

yeah, my buddy called the impound first and they need him to have a notorized letter from me and the current liscence/registration to pay that 400 bucks fine so he can drive the car out of the impound....

what ticks me off is the fact that the car wasn't stationary for 7 days (which is the city ordinance for it to be towed)

yeah, my friend's got some punk arse neighbors

(excuse my foul language... i am fuming)

Good vent!

Exactly what did you tell them about the car? Do you have any proof that the car has moved? (eg. gas receipts)

Angry That SUCKS Arthur

I'd be very worried about how they towed it and possible damage to the new transmission

Agreed. Sorry to tell you but, unless they towed it with a flatbed or all 4 wheels off the ground, your AWD could be screwed.

****in tow jockeys always look for the nice cars 'cu they know that they can make a fast buck... City tow in san francisco was in the news at least once a week, it's a dirty buisness, and the law apears to be on their side!!! Out here in Cali where the limit is 3 days the oficer must watch the car for 3 days, then mark it with a big ass sticker for 3 days, then they can tow it... Unless the car isn't drivable or registration is 6 months out...

If the towing company towed on two wheels only... Would they be respondsible for damages to the tranny????
I thought they were suppsed to know / check a car to determine if the car is AWD and such.

In texas it is the towing company that would be held liable... don't know about your state.

yeah the worst thing is that i don't think in talking to any of the city staffers that they can take care of anything... as in, i don' tthink its in their authority to just let me have my car back...

i'm trying to find someone higher up in the system to complain to... if anyone has lead, please let me know...

dunno.... this car has been a cash pit.... at this point, the fact that they might try to sell the car before i get a chance to go back to the midwest... i think i have 3 options 1. take next friday off, fly back to chicago and get things sorted out (but that's just going to cost lots of money and i'm not sure if things can be straightened out in one day) 2. forget about this car, cut my losses or 3. get an attorney... but in order for 3 to be worth it, i might have to sue the city for having regulations that are arbitrary and capricious.... that might be an expensive law suit.... although i don't mind someone taking contingent fee on this...

grr... i still love the city of chicago, but so disappointed in the daly dynasty....

oh yeah, someone pointed out gas receipts for moving the car... basically my buddy just drove the car around the block like once every 2, 3 days, so it really hasn't mounted miles.... so... blech...

me sad.... =(

There's not a SVX owner here who doesn't cringe at your story. If it isn't insulting enough latching onto the car "with who knows what" a person has to go thru paper trail... pure and simple stress. Have parents FedEx paper work and save your car, save your car. save the %^&^ing car. Good luck.

that really sucks...feel the pain for you.

hope you solve your problem soon.

sometimes the tow guys or cops, they just really want to tow your car, they just want to ticket you..........does it make them feel better having more cars towed or more tickets written in a day?
