Resonators?

Your pics, looks like a cherry bomb or some resonator?
How about the other cars, factory resonators, straight pipe?

Sound differences?

This might be a dumb question, but are there emissions problems with having one less cat? In which case why are there three OE?

I replaced the cat on my Shelby Turbo with one from a 5.0 Mustang. It really took car of the exhaust pressure and still got hot enough to pass emissions. I also had all 2.5" pipe from the turbo to the tailpipe.

Did you buy new Ford cats or aftermarket?

The shop buys them aftermarket from what i understand. Its a muffler shop and Yakov (my mechanics name) buys them in bulk. I asked him about the mustang exhaust set up. He said that the mustang has 4 smaller cats on thier set up about the same size as the SVX's front two (two in series on each side of a dual exhaust).
When I was first considering this system i asked if it would still pass inspection and he promised that it would. He specifically said that most states have laws that state when a car has over 50K miles that the cats can be replaced legally. From what i have been able to find out that is true in KS, OK, TX and CA (states that i have been in the last few years). Also from what i have read on the net about cats is that they do wear out and should be replaced every 100K miles anyway. After that point they do not help your emission system anymore. My car had about 130K miles on it when i did it (its up to 212K now) and he said that by putting two new cats on my car that the emissions would be better than a stock SVX with 50K miles on it do to the deterioration of the stock system.
The whole job (parts, labor, the whole 9 yards) was $306 at the shop i go to.

Your pics, looks like a cherry bomb or some resonator?

That was actually put on before my exhaust setup was done. When i first got my SVX, the resonator got cracked so the dealership suggested that i put that glaspack on as a replacement. The others with this new custom exhaust don't have that. They just had the resonator removed completely and just have a piece of straightpipe in its place. The sound seems to be exactly the same.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have anyother questions. I have a better camera now than i did when i did this the first time. So when Gavin gets his done this saturday i'll take better pics with my digital camera and post them to my locker.

Some, like you, said they had to wait.

Getting him pissed because you're pissed is not much to motivate him to continue building exhausts for the rest of the SVX owners that would like a Stebro in the future. Answering your calls doesn't make it any easier for him to make time to build it, and he is building it custom just for you. If you are a real pain in the a.., IT MAY EVEN TAKE LONGER!
You're mighty accommodating. Could I interest you in some Florida real estate?

If this is indicative of the prevailing attitude toward this outfit, then anyone contemplating doing business with them might as well expect to be jerked-around.

That was exactly my point!

He did get jerked around. But if you want the last piece of Florida real estate, use an appropriate strategy.

What?!?

Clearly, you've missed mine. The sensible, "appropriate strategy" to counter to an establishment that routinely disses its customers is STOP DOING BUSINESS WITH THEM.

I got a reply from Dan and this is what he said, "Frank, I will have the original muffler delivery now or ship another on
to you on Monday. Sorry about the delays.

Dan
Stebro". Keep in mind that I placed the order in June. Looks like BBB is usefull.

I'll have to post when I have more time... but the new exhaust is a definite difference. Yes, I got my SVX done on Saturday in KC while visiting Halistan.

Okay, first impressions; definitely a little louder than stock, but under 2500rpm the sound is almost definitely stock. Maybe a little low rumble that's not there with the stock exhaust. When you goose the gas there is a "hissing" noise... a slightly metallic hissing noise that's only really audible outside the car (though audible a little from inside). I suspect it's caused by the piece of flex-pipe that the mechanic (Yakov) put in the exhaust to take up stresses and strains of expansion/contraction. It's possible that a lined flex pipe might eliminate this noise making it sound almost stock.

Performance impressions; well it's hard to put numbers on it, but the car FEELS sprightlier. A little extra pickup... definitely revs higher and quicker than it did before (I don't think I ever saw 6000rpm before today in my 96), actually idles smoother... which probably confirms my suspicion that my engine was running a little rough at idle due to backpressure from a partially collapsed cat.

I'll post in a day or two once I've gotten more used to driving her.

It's also nice to have an exhaust without those bloody rattling heatshields!!!

Oh, and I have no resonator... glasspack or otherwise. It was gone long before I did this.

It's not gonna sound like a Ferrari with just the rear muffler section... That may make it alittle louder, but the tone won't chance all that much... you'll need all three peices to give it the sound that I am talking about... Good luck getting all of them anyway though

I think that ya should call Dan back and tell him that ya think ya should get all the other peices of the exhaust because you had to wait so long

lol, I should. But, I was going to order the high-flow cat and resonator from motorsport warehouse later on when I get some cashflow going. Who knows, maybe it will sound pretty nice with just the rear section. I dont think anyone on this site, who has a stebro, has ordered just the rear section. I'll post some soundclips when I get mine put on. I already have some soundclips of the stock exhaust set-up in my locker.

Check this out GreenMarineSVX. Dan Petschenig: Frank, the first unit is lost by UPS and we are currently producing another unit for you. Let me know if this is OK. Me: Thats fine with me but, how about a free euro resonator as a gift? Its
only fair. And, how did it get lost? Dan Petschenig: Hi Frank, I agree that if fair. I will send out a resonator at no
charge to make up for the shipping delays.

That is freaking awesome!! He even gave me a tracking number that turned out to be correct!! If both pieces show up, it'd be the happiest day of my life. Damn! I'm so excited! I cant wait!

Hey,

My offer to buy your Stebro if you didn't want it still stands. So, if you are lucky enough to have two, then you should you should buy some lotto tickets! GreenMarineSVX gave some good advice to ask for the Euro resonator, so why not take some advice on the lotto? Who knows, maybe you are lucky this month!

So, it wasn't really his fault, and he was truly forthright. Sometimes giving someone the benefit of the doubt can work out to be a good thing.
