suddenly died

im just cruising along do about 40mph and and i go to give it some gas and all of a sudden i dont feel any power so i look down and my car is shut off...... i pulle dover to the side, let it sit for 10 secs, tried to start it and when it started the at oil temp, and oil canister flashed at me then went away, i knew i was low on oil but does having low oil and really hot oil make your car suddenly shut off????
