Stereo Question

Any one know the mounting depth available for the head unit? I'm looking a Pioneer AVIC-D3 Double Din deck. The face is not motorized so clearing the cover shouldn't be a big issue, but whether there is enough room in the dash is. The listed dimensions for this unit are 7" x 4" x 6 1/2".. Any thoughts?

Thanks! Can't believe I didn't look there, it's in my bookmarks! Looks like I'd have an 1/8 inch in back, not sure if it will work. Maybe I'll mock something up and see how it goes. I didn't want to take my deck out now as it's a royal pain to get it back in!

"elvis" installed a AVIC-D2 — see this post. So if the depth is the same as on the D3, it should fit.

The thing to watch out for is that a manufacturer's depth measurement may not include wires that protrude out the back (both hard-wired "pigtails" and plug-in harnesses, RCA plugs, the antenna, etc.). On the other hand, their spec could be allowing a more generous margin than you really need for protruding wires to bend and still fit in the dash.

When a HU is a tight fit, it will probably require getting your hands on one to take your own measurements, or at least finding detailed pictures of the rear.

Here's a review on cnet.com that you might find interesting.

Geeze, it has a fan on the back!

Thanks for the info, and the review! The disc swapping they complain about in it isn't going to be an issue as I use my iPod for all my music. I'm gonna see if I can find dimensions for the older model and see how they compare as I would hate to shell out that kind of cash just to not have it fit! Thanks again for the quick responses, you guys rock!

Well, I found the dimensions for the D2 and it looks to be 6 1/4" deep. I know thats only 1/4" less than the D3, but as it seems the fit was tight for "elvis" I'm gonna have to dwell on this one for a bit.
