How do i make sure...
That the shop does my bearings right this time.
They did them 2 thursdays ago, and they went bad within a week. As far as I know, that was the first time they were done. Before he did them, I reminded him about the greese. He said he knew, and has done several SVX's and has never had a problem. So what is left to say to him? The place where they are getting done is at home (about 300 miles from where i go to school) so, driving back there again would be very very inconvienant. Why does everything have to be so complicated with these cars? Why cant something just go RIGHT for once. -Mike |

This is from a dealer bulletin. My housing/knuckle had to be replaced a while ago. (on warrenty) Hi Ho...
Replacing AWD Rear Wheel Bearings on Legacy, Impreza and SVX. When replacing rear wheel bearings on all wheel drive Legacy, Impreza, and SVX vehicles, be certain not to over-torque the lateral link bolt that secures the two transverse suspension arms to the wheel bearing housing. Do not use air tools to tighten the nut. The proper torque is probably less than you think. Since the torques are different for the different models and years, refer to the appropriate manuals for the proper specs for the vehicle you are working on. If this bolt is overtorqued, it can deform the housing and may lead to a repeat failure of the wheel bearing. If you encounter a repeat failure of a rear wheel bearing occurring in an unreasonably short amount of miles, the housing may have been deformed dur-ing the first repair. Replacement of the bearing and the housing may be required. There are some other things to remem-ber when working on the wheel bear-ings. Never loosen or tighten the axle nut with the weight of the vehicle on the wheel. The vehicle should be in the air with the wheel removed prior to loosen-ing or tightening the axle nut. If this precaution is not taken, damage to the wheel bearing may occur. The axle nuts are not reusable. A new nut should be used with the new bearing. Always insure that the new bearing is properly packed with suitable wheel bearing grease. The grease that the bearing is shipped with is not sufficient. Always use the proper special tools to install the bearing and torque the axle nut to the correct specifications. |

Greasing Bearings
Many years ago an old and very knowledgeable and experienced mechanic showed me how to repack a bearing. The important point he made was that the bearing must be packed with grease from only ONE side, pressing the grease through until it comes out the reverse side. When packed from both sides an airlock forms in the centre so that the grease does not penetrate fully.
I doubt that modern mechanics are taught the basics of proper practical workmanship. He told me that at the technical school he attended in his youth they had a bearing which could be disassembled after greasing to illustrate the point and he therefore learned the lesson well.
