I remember watching when I was a youngster... I could have sworn he was older than 76

I used to watch him, too. The reason you all think he was older was because he acted and made himself up to appear much older than his true age. He was a relatively young man when he began the program.

We'll miss him.

I will miss him too. I spent many an hour watching that show. I was a little surprised to find out he was only 76 as well.

If I did my math correctly, he was born in 1928. The show started in 1955 (same year I was born ). From 1928 to 1955 was 27 years. So, he was 27 years old when he first started playing the "Grandfatherly" captain. He obviously "sold" the character. The show ran 'til 1984. So, he was only 56 when it went off the air.

Which means he was putting himself through college playing Clarabell
on The Howdy Doody Show.

That is a shame. His show was part of my daily ritual in the late 60's & early 70's. I did not realise the show aired as long as it did, nor that he was that young. He made a lot of kids very happy. I used to love "Mr. Moose".
