SVX vs Evo 8 weight distribution...

So, the Evo 8 and the WRX both have the same 60/40 weight distribution as the SVX. I imagine the 2004 WRX STi has a similar weight distribution also. I'm getting the impression that most AWD cars have this weight distribution. Why do people bag on the SVX weight distribution so much?

I think it's the torque distribution that is often brought up. The SVX has a variable power split between 90/10 all the way up to 50/50 depending on conditions.

the TOTAL weight is what hurts - SVX outweighs 'em both.

Someone just mentioned in a thread the other day that they spoke to an engineer at SOA who said that the base power split is actually 80/20 f/r. Can anyone confirm/deny this?

The torque split in the USA SVXi is 90/10 front rear. On slippery surfaces it can go to 50/50.

I think the Euro & Asian models are different. I think they are 50/50 normally and I do not know what the split goes to on slippery surfaces. Don't hold me to this because I do not have it in front of me.

I think they change it to 50/50 when the car accelerates too, right?

Yes I believe it goes 50/50 from a stop. It seems to depend on how hard you hit the pedal but not necessarily power mode.

As per SOA Engineering: all 4EATs except VTD equipped models have an intial split of 80/20 with up to 50/50 split when needed. This includes European and Asian models.

The overall weight of the SVX is the issue people bring up, not the weight distribution, IIRC.

Well... the SVX has VTD... doesnt it?

I thought that ment variable torque distribution. The torque does vary in distribution does it not?

VTD= Variable Torque Distribution System. Basically this AT was introduced with the VDC version of the outback in '00 or '01. The characteristics of this AT is a little different. Rather than 3 clutch packs it uses 6 and has a planetary gearset as well to vary the torque. It's initial torque split in the VDC and WRX and Legacy GT are 45/55 with a rear bias. In the VDC the VDC system also includes traction control where braking is added to an individual wheel that is spinning, and throttle control as well as yaw sensors to keep your car going w/o skidding. In the WRX it doesn't have the VDC features. The Legacy GT in '03 has VTD coupled with a sport-shifter feature which is a manumatic system.

The 4EAT in the SVX is similar in design to the other 4EATs in the subies.

The B11s has a 5EAT with VTD with a 35/65 torque split rear bias. Yum Yum

I recall seeing an ad for the SVX where they really promoted that it had VTD... Did the SVX's in japan have VTD?

VTD did not come out until '01. They might have said it had variable torque, which is true, but it didn't have the VTD system.

Do you know if the power (torque?) split changes under acceleration as mentioned in this thread? It would be really cool if someone could get a map showing how this tranny reacts to acceleration, slippage, and anything else I'm forgetting.

Yes under acceleration the rear wheels have more "grip" so the power is shifted back. The TCU learns all this and adapts itself to situations moving power front to rear as needed.
