Ah,yes. Once upon a time, back in the glory days of the '50s & '60s, where I'm still living MY life, cars actually had heavy chrome bumpers. Parallel parking was the norm, & all cars were mandated to be 21 feet long. Parking spaces were mandated to be 18 feet long. Power steering was something only found on Cadillacs. How DID we manage? Parking "by ear" was acceptable. Scuff & scrape marks were on chrome were the norm. It wasn't easy to actually dent heavy chrome. Nonetheless, J.C. Whitney, Pep Boys & the rest sold VERTICAL chrome "bars" that custom fit each car's bumper. I think some had thick rubber padding. These were very popular in New York City & other "challenged" cities. Their popularity died out, but I don't remember why. Probably a conspiracy amongst auto manufacturers to thwart non-obsolescence or declare them "ugly". Anyway, there's probably an opportunity here for Ripimoff Industries to come to the rescue & revive these wonderful devices. Or...maybe someday an automobile company will develop the technology to actually make a real BUMPER that can actually be BUMPED at 2 mph without totalling the vehicle.
.................Naaaaaaaaah!!!

Ron.

I would prefer the surveillance approach over the prophylactic one.

The more bumpers you have, the more the Pinball Wizards in their SUVs think you are impervious to their parking by ear style.

Would a front facing camera and a rear facing one both record onto the same tape/machine? Would it use up the battery power?

Lwin?

Just put phony cameras inside the car. One on the rear parcel shelf facing backwards, and the other on the dash facing forward. Then put a sign in the car saying. "This car protected by XYZ Antitheft/Collision System. You are being video recorded. Violaters will be prosecuted" ; or something like that. Make the sign look official.

I don't believe a man, raised in Hell's Kitchen, would even suggest such a thing.

"This car protected by XYZ Antitheft/Collision System. You are being video recorded. Violaters will be prosecuted" in "New York-ese" translates to "Please break into my car and steal my expensive video equipment and, take my stereo and anything else you find while you're at it."

Yeah. We need to get a tape recorder that record both of the AV stuff. The do not come in cheap. If you get a regular survailence tape recorder with one AV input, you can get them cheaper.
Put a 12 hour tape and roll it from a second battery. That battery can be charged while the car is running.

It all depends on $$$

Anyone else recall films of the old cars from the 20's with those spring steel bumpers? I've seen them driving into brick walls at speed, bounce into the air from the rebound and nearly toss the driver out of the car and onto his @ss without any damage whatsoever to the car. Amazing stuff those old bumpers! It would be pretty hard to keep them that functional and still look like they belong on today's cars but damned if they didn't work like a charm doing what a bumper is supposed to do.

Yeah, it's pretty hard to get pregnant using one of those "prophylactic" cameras!

I'd just like to apologize for not keeping my cool. I hate it when that happens, but... jeeeeezzzzzz it's SO frustrating to have my car getting it's ass kicked and being completely helpless about it. ARGH. I'm sure you guys know how I feel, since you obviously love your cars too.

>sigh<

Next year, I have my own spot though. I just have to remember that.

Ok.. I usually stay out of Cash's posts but I take offence at pointing the finger at the cop... By law he can only site someone for something that he (the officer) has witnessed. And a piddly fender bender just wastes his time. Unless there is some physical injury to one of the people why even call the police, except to get a report to give to your insurance agent? Don't park on the street if you want to insure that you don't get hit. Ya plays the game ya takes yor chances. If you keep getting hit it must be something that you are doing or have some control over. Adjust your habits to avoid parking on heavily trafficked areas. Leave your car home… perhaps…..grow up and quite whining that everyone is out to get you. And Cash… learn to talk without the profanity…

Profanity is still the attempt of a weak mind to express it’s self forcefully…

Did you even bother to read this post? No, you didn't, otherwise you'd know there is no real other 'option' for parking. I live downtown in a crowded city, and the only parking spots available are 130.00+... a MONTH. So yeah, in the future, please stay out of the topics I create, and quit trying to bait me. Piss off.

now now boys

now, now, no fighting ;D

hmm...well actually you can call your insurance to reimburse you for the damage and classify it as a hit and run in a parking lot. some insurance requires a police report, but i've done it before without. but keep in mind that filing such a claim goes down in your insurance record. they won't raise your insurance the first time, but if i'm not mistaken the agent that i know told me that if 3 of these types of claims are filed (any claim that isn't your fault and there is no other person to charge) within a 3 year time period, your insurance will go up. i mean how much would it cost to pay to fix it yourself? be cheaper in the long run. besides it's not the cops fault. i mean he's taking a one sided story, that's why if you have an accident he separates the two of you and talks to both of you individually to get the whole story and from his observation of damage come up with who's at fault. since it's your word alone, it's not enough.

keeping others from hitting you....hmm...if this pisses you off so much then either find a better parking space further out and walk, take a train or public transportation if available, or if you really want to go all out, buy some of those plastic posts with chains on them and surround your car with a 4 foot buffer. make sure it's bright. flashing lights would be a plus.

for me, i'm more into the "**** happens" motto. i love my car, but hey **** happens. i've let people off for bumping me slightly at stop lights. i mean what am i going to do? beat a 7 month pregnant woman for bumping my car at 3mph? wiped it a little, looked at the woman, got back in the car and drove off. same thing for this lady who was about 75. she was so worried i'd call the police, but when i told her not to worry about it she was so relieved. point of this.....let the little things get you blood pressure up and you'll eventually have a stroke.

ok...well, um, hey rob...seems you haven't been doing too good with the car and all. um...hey, anybody in for a game of twister or something...

i kinda agree with the language and all, it really take attention away from what happened to you. it bites and all that, but you don't need to use that kinda language. you would probably get better results in life if you didn't act out like that. think of it this way....2 25 year olds are beating each other up and a cop comes rolling up. 25yr old A says *(^(_%&#(_^!@#_*&&#$)(_%^#_(* and 25yr old B says, officer, this guy started with me for no apparent reason...i was walking by him and he hit me in the side of the head...A says well......*(&$#_(@&%_@&#_%*#%)*(#&@*&%#(_&%_(#&... now my question is, who gets arrested? maybe both, but who has a better chance in getting off with nothing, even though 25yr old B started the fight? i don't want to see what happened last time happen again...you seem to have made over 80 posts without a problem...

try the camera thing if you wish...or pay some big guy to stand by your car at all times...either way, it will cost a lot and your car won't get hit anymore, or you could try having pressure sensitive bumpers hooked up to some kinda thingy that will put paint or something on the car that hits you, that way you have something to prove to the cops with..i dunno, is there anyway you could get a beater to drive to school or where ever you are when you get hit?
