This car is hot!!!! But the grill needs to be run straight across, without that oval freaking thing........
Can someone photoshop it that way?

Not expecting this car to be cheap.

In profile and overall shape, it actually looks most like a Maserati 3200 Coupe, a point nobody mentioned.

The SVX was shown as a concept in 89, and was on sale in Japan mid 91 with minor modifications, Europe and US in 92.

So expect this one to be on sale in Japan in two year's time.

Subaru/Fuji have taken to heart the slagging they received world wide about the look of the WRX. Their response is to import a chief of design from Italy, poached from Alfa. Alfa cars are well liked in Japan, they will be hoping this love affair will stick, and sell plenty of units in the home market.

So they will want to retain some feature that spells out Italian, maybe even Alfa. Hopefully that front intake is not it. It is OK for styling statements to be brave. It is totally off the ball for them to be ugly.

Fix it Fuji!!!

Joe

I know car design has moved on from the days of the SVX, but this car is nowhere near as beautiful as the original.

It's "squat" and "fat" and "lumpy" rather than being "sleek" and "curvaceous". The nose looks too heavy like an Audi TT and the back seems to be too short and high, like a VW Corrado.

The interior looks horrible: Somebody on this group said that the Blue-Green Alcyone Floor Mats look like a Smurf yakked on them (personally I like them). But I think the Smurf yakked all over the interior of this car. (What's wrong with black leather, fake wood and alcantara?)

The controls are also far too minimalist for such a sophisticated car - although that tends to be the way in concepts.

I think it might look better if the back was lengthened, with a bigger tailgate and more overhang behind the rear wheel. I also think the wheels need to be a bit smaller so that the wheel arches blend with the shape rather than looking like they were stuck on as an afterthought.

Phil.

Todd,

I agree with you. I read the story. If this is Grand Utility Tourisimo (GUT), then my GUT feeling is I don't like the styling. It has too many broken lines, sharp angles, and opposed shapes.
It overall design does not flow from one "eye catcher" into another. To me the whole is a lot less than the sum of the parts.

The mechanicals are another story. I do like the sound of a twin tubo flat six and 5-speed auto. tranny. I know that FHI has the engineering and design expertise to build a dual range 5-speed auto tranny. I wish that they would. They could start with a dual range 4EAT in the BAJA. Just my 2 cents.

Phil,

You make a few good points here, I would agree with a lot of what you say.

High at the rear is an SVX thing. The boot on our cars looks big and bulbous. It's caused as you know by the rear drive gubbins being under the floor.

The design brief for the current Vette insisted on space for two sets of golf clubs, very sensible. Fuji mention "sporting" in their press release, so room for these may have caused the boot to grow upwards. My only caveat is the bootlid looks narrow at the bottom for putting in wide loads and the paint will suffer.

The concept interiors rarely make it unmolested from show to street, so I would not worry too much about the Smurf yak just yet.

Having a "big nose" I think is non-negotiable here. Our SVXs have a longer front overhang than the majority of cars, a feature I like. This newer version is going to have one, maybe two intercooler rads in this area, along with the coolant rad big enough to deal with 400 hp worth of heat, and the A/C rad, and a bigger ATF cooler. It will need a big nose to accommodate all that.

I like the big wheels, bet they will grow on you. I would expect the street model to have a rear camera for reversing with a satnav video screen on the centre console where that stupid grill thing is in the show car.

It's growing on me, I even like the pearl paint. However, that great gaping orifice of a central air intake will have to be modified. If it needs to be that big for cooling, fine, but the shape is awful, and it would need to be visually minimised. It is too "in yer face", and detracts from what is essentially a pretty coherent design.

Joe

Too much "ALFA" in the nose for my tatses. The could soften it with a Maserati type nose or even Pontiac nose. The Maser usually has a trident insignia in the grill center. FHI could use the ALCYONE insignia with horns in the grill center.

The kids today like heavy looking styling. Just look at most of the women's shoes today. They are so clunky. Eventually the styling pendulum will swing back and we will get more graceful designs like the Jag XKE and Lambo Miura. Remember the original Lear Jet.

You are reading my mind Larry.

Fuji will probably want some Alfa-like feature in there, they want European. Traditional Alfa grills are elegant, unlike this travesty.

That intake would not look bad with an aperture the approximate shape of the Alcyone hood badge, maybe even with the horns as the emblem.

Look how sweet the rad grill is on the Jaguar Stype supercharged car, also a 400 hp model. They can be made to look powerful and hungry for air without looking bulbous or ugly.

One more thing they got wrong...

They should have kept the SVX windows. Maybe we can retrofit them.

(Unfortunately I don't have the time or the software at work to draw this properly)

If FHI wanted to go with Italian designers, I'd have prefered they stuck with Giugiaro, who produced last years star of the Geneva show:

...but then they didn't ask me.

You're almost there, Shane! Can you do one like you have this one except instead of angling in as they rise to the top of the opening, have then angle outward at the same angle and base starting point? More like a "V" than an "A".
