Gas Mileage

Hey,

How many miles do all of you usually get out of a full tank?

I can usually get 400 to 460 in the summer. It was an adventure figuring this out as the gas gauge spent most of the time on E for the last 180 miles. It kept me guessing, wondering if that low fuel light in dash really worked.

Tank of gas

Maybe 300 if I'm lucky. Despite the early E I ALWAYS fill back up as soon as that light comes on. Three reasons for this: 1. Running out of gas is really bad for a modern fuel pump. It is "oiled" by the gas. 2. Don't really want to burn contaniments up that have gotten into the tank and sunk to the bottom. 3. I think its embarassing to leave a Subie sit by the side of the road. Ever notice how few you see there?

I have never seen a Suby stranded until last month. Then I saw 3 of them: one 91 Leg, newer OB and a forester.

None since then.

Angry this sucks

I think something is wrong with my car. With a full tank I get 100 miles to half tank and then half tank to empty I get 50. What is wrong with it?

Short trips? City driving? Heavy right foot? I'm sure I could get mileage that bad if I only drove to work (1 mile) and back on a whole tank. But I hope I never do.

If you made a lot of short trips it will really kill your mileage. For instance this is my schedule.

7:15 AM Start car.
7:25 AM drive to school.
7:40 AM arrive at school and shut car off.
3:05 PM Start car
3:10 PM Drive home.
3:20 PM Arrive home. Shut off car.
3:35 PM Start car, Drive to work.
3:36 PM Arrive at work. Shut off car.
7:00 PM Start car
7:05 PM Drive home
7:06 PM Arrive home, shut off car.

Doing that gives me like 13 MPG, driving like a grandma. I get around 200 miles before I get a little past 1/4 tank.

On weekends I drive longer than 30 minutes at a time and romp on the gas sometimes, I get between 17 and 20. This is all local driving with lots of stop lights. I now cut back and I dont drive to school as often to save gas and frequent starts.

Try some fuel injector cleaner, change your air filter if it needs it, fill up your tires to at least 33 PSI.
