Need TSB For Wheel Bearings
Anyone have a copy of the REAR WHEEL BEARING TSB? I'm ready to paper-cut my local Subaru dealer with it as I am bringing in my '96 for a 3rd replacement in 11 months.
Grrrrrr. -Thanks!

Sounds like a hub problem. It's probably not the wheel bearing itself causing your trouble. Could be the hub or the housing itself.

5,000 miles ago, they replaced the housing & bearing.
Could alignment be a contributor? Car tracks straight and dealer mech has not recommended an alignment.....

Hi Dave,
I am having rear wheel bearing problems and just wondered where you took it (Cherry Hill Subaru??). I f so, I need to find someone else to do it based on your experience. I think the guys at Grove Street Auto in Haddonfield are good. I could order the bearings online. Any suggestions on who would know best how to do this? Michael

Cherry Hill Subaru. They did the 2nd replacement free, as they should.
So far, it's pretty quiet, but, if it kicks up again I'd love to have a copy of the directive to wave at them. Their service, not including the bearing issue, has been good. they were very polite about the replacements, but it was still a hassle being without the SVX....times 2.

Is this the service bulletin you're looking for?
If so, I've got the PDF here: New Procedure for Replacing Rear Wheel Bearings

this might be what you're looking for
This is a cut and paste, there were other topics (about 6 pages worth). The bold text below is my doing, not Subaru's.
Technical Service Bulletin # SHU0495 Date: 950401 Service Helpline Update - April 1995 SERVICE HELPLINE UPDATE APRIL 1995 Replacing AWD Rear Wheel Bearings REPLACING AWD REAR WHEEL BEARINGS ON LEGACY, IMPREZA AND SVX When replacing rear wheel bearings on All Wheel Drive LEGACY, IMPREZA, and SVX vehicles, be certain not to overtorque the lateral link bolt that secures the two transverse suspension arms to the wheel bearing housing. DO NOT AIR GUN THE BOLT OFF. The proper torque is probably less than you think. Since the torques are different for the different models and years, refer to the appropriate manuals for the proper specs for the vehicle you are working on. If this bolt is overtorqued, it can deform the housing and may lead to a repeat failure of the wheel bearing. If you encounter a repeat failure of a rear wheel bearing occurring in an unreasonably short amount of miles, the housing may have been deformed during the first repair. Replacement of the bearing and the housing may be required. There are some other things to remember when working on the wheel bearings. Never loosen or tighten the axle nut with the weight of the vehicle on the wheel. The vehicle should be in the air with the wheel removed prior to loosening or tightening the axle nut. If this precaution is not taken, damage to the wheel bearing may occur. The axle nuts are NOT reusable. A new nut should be used with the new bearing. Always insure that the new bearing is properly packed with suitable wheel bearing grease. The grease that the bearing is shipped with is NOT sufficient. Always use the proper special tools to install the bearing and torque the axle nut to the correct specifications. |

Dave,
How much does CH Subaru charge per bearing with labor? Does the PDF file cover SVX as well...it doesn't mention it.

About $410 each. I didn't see the SVX mentioned either...I'm still looking and am certain that I've seen it before.
