Porters Avatar
I have been looking at Porters Avatar for awhile thinking ...
Oh it's a donut with red icing. Then I took a real close look at it. Who took the picture? And I assume it's your SVX? |

Hahaha!
Nope, that's a WRX STi v4 on track at Donington Park in the UK... But I've made the rotors on an Impreza RS do that several times! Late braking on mountain roads will do that if you go hard enough... 70mph into a 30mph corner, stab the brakes, chirp the tires, whip the wheel into the corner to produce a little oversteer while still braking, transition smoothly to gas, power out of the corner while countersteering the other way. Wash, rinse, repeat. After one particular run, I had a passenger declare on the Impreza board that I needed to install a "spare shorts" dispenser in the dash for passengers. I thought that was high praise! In that particular case it took the rotors about 5 minutes to stop glowing after we stopped. I've probably done that on the SVX but I've been too busy driving to get out and look... the smoke out of the wheelwells is a good sign though. Last edited by Porter; 05-08-2003 at 12:17 PM. |

Here's the full pic... I believe this is John Felstead driving and the hood scoop has ripped off at speed due to some weak clips he was using. Wind resistance is a bish when you are driving an aerodynamic brick!

Pretty cool, Porter. I always realized it was a wheel spinning at a good clip... but didn't realize that the red was the glowing hot rotor.
I gotta take a driving school course so I could confidently drive kinda like that... and have a car that doesn't mind that kind of abuse too much. These Minnesota roads don't comply too well with that kind of spirited driving... dang potholes.

Yeah I always knew what it was, but I figured this would be a good time to tell you about my ricer idea. Not that I would ever actually DO this, but I always thought it'd be fun to put red lights IN YOUR WHEEL WELL and hook them up to your brake lights with a BIG capacitor.... that way when you had the brakes on for a while they'd start to glow red, then gradually fade off once you took your foot off the pedal.
yeah. Lame. But kinda cool in it's own way, because I don't know if anybody has ever done it. - Rob |

It would be funny to see a ricer with it. Seems a bit too complicated for a ricer to think of or actually do, though.

The only time I have witnessed rotors like that was on the back of a Firebird at the local burnout compatition. They actually caught on fire and the kids arming the water hose starting spraying them down. I'll bet thoes rotore where in good shape after that.
