I presented a guest speaker at a conference with a little gift once (has anybody seen Doug Wead in the news lately? Well, it was him). He opened the box, and pulled out the contents. It was the letters "R" and "E" covered in bright red fur. He said, "What is this." I said, "I heard you'd always wanted a RED FUR "R" "E".

"I heard you'd always wanted a RED FUR "R" "E".

Aredub, it's probably a good thing I'm not coming to Rockford this weekend. I'd probably have to hurt you

Nah! I'd just let Doug mess with your tubing

But you may have an opportunity to disrupt your life with my aquaintance later this summer. I talked to the "keeper" of the lighthouse today. Turns out I can arrange to have private tours if I can arrange them in advance. I'm messing with the idea of having a ?meet? for whoever might be interested later this summer. We could all climb to the top of the tower, spit off of it, say "ain't this cool" and then go behave like children for a while. There is also a nice 9 hole golf course adjacent to the lighthouse that could turn into a major embarrassment for anyone willing to play. Maybe you guys could talk it over this weekend and give me some feedback from the Rockford crowd. As much as I'd like to I just can't make it. (divorce is not in my near future if I can help it). I'm only about an hour an a half further up the road from Rockford by the way so those willing to make that trip might want to stretch a bit further. Plus the one or two who have their machines in the shop could then make an appearance properly "clothed".

And who you callin' brute? I'm a compassionate man

Spit...fire!

<There's a reason only children look up Us "adults" know better>

Adults don't look up because of all the problems of the world. They go around with their heads down most of the time....except astronomers.

Lightning....just heard on the news that the Cape Hatteras Light will be closed to visitors for at least 3 months. A bracket holding part of the staircast broke off and fell (no one hurt) They are investigating the cause. Glad no one was on it at the time.

The Wind Point Light was closed for about 3 years while they decided how to pay for the cast iron steps to be reinforced. Rust never sleeps. I have no idea why someone would build something to last near the water and make some important parts out of iron. Duh!

Maybe one of the engineers that join us occasionally could shed some light on that for us. (HAR)

I should ask my wifes neice this question, but do they actually pay the weather guys at the teevee station?

I'd hate to be a weather caster in the WI area. With all the water around here the weather can change to almost whatever it wants to in minutes.

And I'm also glad I'm, uh, *not* and engineer.

Just a guess, but I figure the lighthouse keeper didn't have a whole lot to do, so scraping and painting everything every year was probably part of the job description and a time occupier.

And I know you know how long properly protected metal will last.

I say its the fault of YOU and your neighbors for not keeping it protected

Rusty

<I have no idea why someone would build something to last near the water and make some important parts out of iron. Duh!>

My guess is that since most lighthouses are fairly old, there were no rust-free metals or alloys available to them at that time. The money has not been there to keep many operating, let alone well-maintained. Heavy iron, painted often, was the cheapest and strongest way to go. Any ironwork, such a bolts, that passed thru brick or concrete could easily begin to corrode from sea spray and rain, away from the eyes of any inspection. One lighthouse in the Mississippi delta was constructed with a stone staircase, but its weight helped the lighthouse sink and crumble into the swamp in just a few months after its construction.
