Chike, how did you find the part number for the internal filter screen? I've been browsing the subaruparts.com website for a while, under all appropriate categories, and can't seen to find it... They do suck with their taxonomy at times, though. I'll keep looking, but if anyone knows what strange, abstract category it's under - let me know.

Edit: I just found it - it's under the "at.control valve" section. The part number you metioned earlier, 31728AA011, matches it.

So, 31728AA011 is the number of the strainer (for all years that were equipped with it). 31397AA040 is the number for the trans-pan gasket on years 92 and 93. 31397AA041 is the number for the trans-pan gasket on years 94 and 95. subaruparts.com has and identical trans-pan gasket illustration for 96 and 97 as it does for 94 and 95, but it appears you cannot order the gasket for those years - there is no link.

If it helps any, the internal filter kit I bought included a new gasket (Advance Auto)

Mine came with a gasket as well. Complete kit - filter screen, O-ring, and gasket for $35.00.

I got mine from NAPA. I have the part number on the previous page of this thread. Just go in to NAPA and give them your information, and they will get you one in a day or two. They usually have to order them from the warehouse, but it is usually only a day or two. If you have any problems, let me know.

I just replaced my 4EAT strainer today. Wasn't too bad of a job - just time consuming.

I haven't driven it much since the replacement, but I can't imagine it yielding anything but good results.

BTW - Has anyone else that has dropped the 4EAT pan noticed that huge donut-shaped magnet in there? Mine had some strange sludge on it (I'm assuming metal particles mixed with oil), and, quite strangely, the sludge gave the donut kind of a daisy-like shape. There were 6 segments to the gunk buildup, each equal in size. The center was pretty empty. The good news is that I only found one very very small metal shaving.

All of the tubing inside the pan also seemed to have this strange sludge on it. It's all gone after a thorough cleaning, I just found it interesting.

Thanks, Chike! Nice write-up with good pictures.

You make me feel like doing this job in this coming summer.

Did two of you do this job together or one just look and one take pictures? It needed 3hrs for two persons? One man job will be 6hrs?? Can I come over during the summer and do this job and have fun together?

Yep, there should be one or two magnets in the pan - rectangular with a hole in the center ("donut"). I'd be a little concerned about the "strange sludge" - you shouldn't see anything on the tubing other than ATF. You might just want to do another change of the ATF soon - dropping the pan again to drain as much out as possible.

Me too Bill,

If it's drawn to the magnet it has metal. I think you're seeing the material coming off the high clutch (but just a guess) - I'd take it easy for shifts to 3 & 4. Might consider a thread asking members about this.

Andrew and my younger brother passed me tools while I was under the car. SVXfiles also provided phone support numerous times during the day - couldn't call it a solo effort by any stretch.

There was only one magnet in the pan. Circular with a hole in the center. Exactly like the picture that Chike posted at the beginning of this thread.

The "sludge" on the magnet was a dark gray, and was built up about 0.25 inches thick. It wiped away very easily.

A very similar "film" was on the piping in the transmission. It was very thin, and wiped away easily. Almost the exact same shade as the piping itself, actually.

Could this perhaps have anything to do with the fact that my 4EAT was rebuilt about 28k miles ago?

BTW - I also found a very similar looking "sludge" on the magnetic drain plug in the front differential. It was much more difficult to wipe away, I am assuming because gear oil is obviously much thicker than ATF.

Any ideas? New thread, maybe?

Maybe...it could just be from the new parts "getting to know each other".... I'd still suggest dropping the pan after a couple hundred miles on the ATF you just put in to see if you get any repeat of "the sludge". My guess is you won't (at least I hope you don't!).

Anyway, it's a good team work.

And, with this good write-up, it helps alot pple. I can probably do everything by myself in few good hours........thanks

I was planning on draining the fluid again soon. Always a good thing to do, eh? I will be sure to make note of the sludge again, if necessary.

With the filters that I have helped change, the magnet looked the same as you describe. The more sludge, probably the longer time between filter changes. I would guess that most have never changed them.
