POWER mode on :)

I have a theory that should work for those who not have a "Power" switch.

When I was reading the manual on the 4EAT I saw something that cought my eye: "If the ATF temptature goes too high, the 4EAT is put into "power" mode, using the higher revs to cool down the tranny".

Well maybe not EXACTLY those words, but

Soo, what if we hooked a wire and switch to the temp-sensor, that would fool the ECU to think we have a high-temp condition in the 4EAT, and engage the "Power" mode ?

if you want to engage power mode, cut the white wire on the TCU at B8. Put a relay on it connected like

Pin 30 on the white wire (TCU side)
Pin 87a on the white wire (car harness side)
Pin 87 to Ground
Pin 85 to Ground
Pin 86 to +12V SWITCH ......this activates power mode.

In theory this should work. I think I might try it actually

Would that effect normal operation of power mode? As in if you stomp on it, it will go into power mode even if you don't hit the button.

Is this the wire that goes to the ATF-temp. sensor ?

I would just about kill to have a power mode switch instead of having to punch the throttle through the floor all the time. I'll be a guinea pig, if necessary.

Switch on power mode.

Hi Sonny, had a look at this before. You would have to use a switch to connect a 220 ohm resistor across the wires;

Yellow/green B10 at plug B67
brown/red A20 at plug B66

This will take the reading into the hot zone, without trigging a fault code.

Harvey.

I read something similar about how the TCU responds to high fluid temperature. There is a light on the dash just for this condition and it does function. As I recall, when the ATF becomes too hot, the TCU changes the shift points and disables fourth gear. The reasoning behind this it that with the engine and transmission spinning faster, it can pass more ATF through the transmission cooler and get better cooling.

I may be a little off-base, but I'm pretty sure I recall that correctly.

Also, there is a switch in the car for making it shift at different points. It's attached to the transmission underneath the car. There's a cable running from the switch to the center console area. If you look carefully between the front seats, there's something sticking up. The other end of this thing is attached to the cable. If you move it, the cable will operate the switch, thus changing gears whenever you move it. Unfortunately it's not labeled, but it's got a button on it and it's wrapped in leather. There's another one behind it that works in a similar way, but it's attached to the parking brake.

If you want power mode, tap the accelerator very lightly and this should turn it on for at least a few seconds. I usually do this if I am anticipating a sudden need to accelerate.

Re: ...

That's funny, b/c on my '96 SVX L, I've never seen the power mode light flash on either. I thought it was b/c my CE light was on - but maybe it is due to a change in the OBDII SVX's???

Has any '96/'97 SVXer ever seen the power mode light come on in their car?

My thoughts Harvey

So you don't see any sideeffects on this?

My first though was to put a potentiometer in parallell of the sensor, so I could adjust it to not trig the faultcode of a broken sensor, but maybe it's unnecessary.

UberRoo, -please clearify that cabling/switch you've found, and how do you know what it does?

Interesting

well I tried what I said and it the trans just downshifts to the lowest gear in about .5 seconds .......pretty dam cool, but useless unless you don't like your transmission anymore. Power light didn't come on, but the trans was expecting the car to be at WOT so it downshifts EXTREMELY fast .........like i said - cool, but not cool at the same time.

If you trying to fool the WOT signal in the TPS sensor, then you get this behaviour.

Looks like we may have to try Harvey's method. Have you checked it out Harvey?

Power Mode

OBDll cars don't have a power mode light. They still go into power mode just no light to tell you. OBDll cars do have a AT oil temp light. You will see it on start up for a couple of seconds and then it goes out, unless you have a trouble code. If the fluid does get to hot while driving the TCU goes into power mode. Subaru should have called it shift mode, shift smart, shift logic or some other BS because it doesn't make powa.
