timing belt issue-help-

I just replaced the timing belt and it runs great but I have 2 bolts about the length of my smallest finger and an alum. bracket (a couple of bends and a welded in bolt on it) left over.

The car runs great until I hit the a/c--then a horrible noise.
Anyone know where these parts might go?

Well, I think the answer is that you've got some bracketry that supports the alternator, AC compressor, etc.

I wouldn't even start the car if I had something that big left over. Are you using any kind of a manual? Even a Chilton's manual would help you pretty well with a timing belt replacement.

You have a pic of the bracket thing? Until you figure out what it is, don't drive it.

For future reference, DO NOT drive a car when you have a major part leftover, a bolt is one thing, a bracket is another. When I did my T-belt, I took it all apart again because I forgot to put a bolt back (still had one left over though )

I've only had parts left over twice. Once was when I rebuild the carburetor in my '85 GL. That car had a rat's nest of vacuum lines under the hood, and I had one of those caps left over. I took it apart two more times, being very thorough and methodical - I never found where it went. The car ran fine for a month and a head gasket blew.

The other time was when I was convinced my security system's wireing harness must have been loose. I had very intermittent remote operation. I was left eith a screw left over, but since it was only for the dash, I left it out.

I make damned sure I don't have any parts left over when doing any other kind of work. If I was left with something as large as a bracket, there's no way I'd soldier on and start the thing.

I have developed a habit to use my digital camera frequently when disassembling something, then you always can put all the pieces together again

Sounds like you've got the bracket for the plastic cover... The one that slips forward to reveal the top of the drive belts. It should be the last thing to go back on (sans cover), right in front of the alternator I believe.

As for the A/C, I would check the tension on your belt. If you didn't get new belts, I would highly recommend doing so. Anyway, when you push on the part of the belt between any two pulleys, you really should only have about 0.25 - 0.5 inches of play max.

Did you remove the A/C compressor during all that work???

That's a good idea. If the repair I'm doing is complicated and new to me, I'll also separate bolts and parts in labeled baggies.

Actually, I missed the part about the "welded" bolt. I don't think there are any brackets with "welded" bolts, but one has a bolt stuck in it (i.e. can't really be removed)... It's the bracket that goes underneath the power steering reservoir. It should have an idler pulley attached to it that is adjusted by the "welded" bolt. That is a VERY essential bracket.

But if you can get a pic for us, then we can most definitely identify, I'm sure.
