Help! I'm Screwed!

Hi guys (and Aly),

Yesterday I went to wash my car before picking up my girlfriend from the airport and I noticed white steam coming out from under my hood.... of course there was the smell of warm antifreeze too. Now I've got myself a nasty crack on the radiator and the shop quoted me $500 for the part. I can get used at $200... what the **** should I do?! I have to get my car going in a couple of days at most. I can't even go to work without getting completely wet on my bike. Any advise??? Thanks in advance!

-Nick

At the tech meet, one of the mechanics talked about some goop that will seal the top of the radiator....I'm trying to remember who it was that talked about the stuff....I think it was Stormin'Norman, sleepem or Jenkin.

When I had mine replaced in December, the radiator cost $380, w/ no install costs cuz I was having a tranny cooler installed, so I guess $500 sounds about right for Smart Service.

Good luck Nick

It was Stormin Normin. He had half of his radiator covered with the stuff! Well, maybe 1/4 of it. Looked good. I forgot what it is called and I am trying to contact him to find out what it was.

elninoalex had accidentally cracked the plastic part of his car's radiator and also had found some off-white goop that sealed the crack.

Tom at Aaron's Auto Wrecking in White Center can sometimes score new radiators for a decent price. Shouldn't be too hard to install it yourself.
They may have a good used one too, he givces a 30 day guarrantee on his parts I think.

Nick, I looked for a quote at www.radiator.com whom I've used in the past.
Their reply when I asked for OEM rather than aftermarket follows:
My name is Chuck but my part tech won't be in until 11:00 in the morning. His name is George. He'll be here to take your call first thing in the morning and the number is 1-800-248-8720 (it's a toll free number). Quote was for $204 .
I've used these folks b4 for my Integra and they can have a brand new rad on your doorstep the next day, no B.S.

Hey RojoRocket,

Thanks for the tip! I just called the the 800 number and the they told me I'd have to go to a dealer for the part... I guess they get to mark it up 100% at least. That sucks! What the heck should I do?

So, the damn Radiator Hotline operates 10+ websites. I called again and this time the part was $150 but they were out of stock. Maybe if called few more times I'll find one?! Carter Subaru on 99 is asking $399.99 for the radiator --> those a-holes are scoring 150% markup. I hate that! Well... I'm still stuck.

Damn, Nick! That sucks! At this point I'm sorry I suggested them to you. Guess it's easy to supply a billion Integra parts, but SVX'es are different. Like we didn't know that!! I can hardly wait til I have to take my turn. I'll be sure to let you know if I run across anything.

So, I got fixed up with a junk-yard radiator for $250. It's been already a week and no problems. I still have my old one and planning on passing it to Earl. If somebody else is interested, let me know. Thanks for the support!

Glad things worked out for you Nick. There is someone over in For Sale etc looking for a bad rad to use, looking into getting something fabricated and available to our membership. Was that what Earl was fixin' to do?
I'd love to make the trek North to see BC and your beautiful state again. If it happens I'll be sure to look you up and share some local "product" and swap some lies!

Thanks Nick

Maybe we can get it fixed good enough to have a spare for the folks around here to get by with until they find a better one.
