Exhaust heat shielding

Was thinking of removing the heat shielding on exhaust system, I've been told there are some advantages to doing this?

Re: Exhaust heat shielding

I can't think of any. I'm not really an expert on this, but I'm pretty sure you want your exhaust to stay as hot as possible till it exits the vehicle so that it does not decrease in volume and cause torque loss from lack of back pressure.

Or something like that? I dunno.

Also I'm pretty sure that if it's raining out or you go through a puddle you can prematurely wear your exhaust parts due to warping. I once was told it was there for a very good reason, but I can't quire remember.

I rang up an exhaust professional in Australia, The guy told me that the main reason that the heat shielding is on the exhaust is for regulation purposes when the cars are manufactured and/or if there are any flammable components 150mm away from the exhaust system.

Most new exhaust systems don't need heat shielding and the only advantage of taking the heat shielding off is the insignificant weight difference, crackling noises eliminated and it basically looks better.

Thanks for the quick reply

Cheers,
Jay

P.S. Why did you keep the heat shielding on your precats?

Re: Exhaust heat shielding

Original purpose of the heat shielding was to prevent grass fires.

Re: Exhaust heat shielding

The only advantage I see to losing the heat shield is to avoid repeated removal and replacement on subsequent tranny swaps...

Re: Exhaust heat shielding

I'm going to be wrapping my new (custom) pre-cats with exhaust wrap. Main reason is I don't want those two stupidly hot stainless steel cans radiating heat onto the tranny. Especially bad in traffic. They also make the floor pretty warm.
