Cranks Forever w/ eventual HARD start ? ? ?
Ok, it's a '92 SVX w/ 77,xxx miles on it. It will crank forever, and finally have a HARD start. If you give it gas during firing it starts a little easier it seems. One acception to this is when you first go out in the morning and if you turn the key right over, not allowing the lights to come on for even a second, it will fire right up. We took it to the Subaru dealer in St. Cloud and they said they couldn't find anything. There has never been a Ck. Engine light on either. They said their guess would be a(n) leaking injector ? They checked the sensors, etc: and they said they were fine? Any ideas on this guys ? ? Thanks for the help ! ! Austin

Try charging the battery. It sounds like it could be a little low on power. If that helps, maybe it needs a new one. These cars are hard on batteries.

Coolant Temp Sensor would be a good place to start.

I'd check battery and chassis grounds while you're pokin' around under the hood. I just had a similar problem with the ground strap that connects the engine block to the intake manifold.

It will also fire right back up after you turn the car off. If you turn the key again w/ no hesitation, it will fire. How much would a new temp senosr run? How hard are they to replace? Where are those connections for the battery located, so I dont look foir them all day long .

I would go for a leaking injector. As it will start up if the key is not in the on position too long, there is not enough time for the leaking injector to flood the engine, making starting hard.
Harvey.

It only starts right up in the morning, when you start it for the first time. Otherwise it is a hard start regardless of how you turn the key. If it was an injector, wouldn't it start right away like that always if you just slammed the key over ? ? Thanks for the help thus far guys, if it is an injector, are they hard to replace, costly to replace, any particular ones prone to failure ? ? I ask that because like in my Super Coupe, the #3 cylinder is the one that usually blows the HG's out. Just a thought i guess, lol . Austin

That's pretty much the same thing mine does, especially with the firing right back up part. If you let it sit an hour or two, it will sometimes be hard or require use of the gas pedal. Not really for fuel as much as for more air. I'm pretty sure Harvey is right about the leaky injector, at least on my SVX. If you go over some of the old Yahoo messages you might see similar conclusions from Beav & Eddycat.

So your saying I just have to wait for it to fail enough to cause a miss fire or something so the CEL will come on. Then I will know what cylinder is bad?

Actually, no. I was just saying that your symptoms very closely resembles mine. As for waiting for the CEL to illuminate, my SVX has had this issue for over 5 years, though admittedly it is getting a bit worse, and I have yet to have the CEL light up.

Ok, So if it is a leaking injector, how hard are the injectors to replace? What # injectors are on these cars anyway?
