Not releasing in "P" position ...
Hi!
I have noticed sometimes that when I go to a stop, and move the gear level to "P", and then turn the engine off, it sort of releases the tranny load. What I mean is that it still seems to have a gear engaged when in "P" position. This happens only now and then, and is not a real problem to me, but I'm curious to know if anyone else has thing behaviour. /Sonny

A possibility could be the transfer clutch binding locking it into 50/50. I had the issue as well as several members and I think there's an additive (made for LSD diffs) that you add to the tranny fluid to help prevent this from happening.

Yes. We get that too, even after the gearbox rebuild. I've always assumed it was normal.
Also, the seatbelt becomes tighter when I shut the engine off. Phil. |

Or, it doesn't want to see you go.

Wild guess
I have always thought there was a difference between Neutral and Park, along the lines you are describing Sonar.
What's common between them is, the engine will start in either position. But Neutral is just that, the car will freewheel in Neutral, the gearbox is not engaged. In Park, I had always thought that one of the clutches was engaged. I say this because the car will bind up if it rolls up or down a hillside parking spot while Park is engaged. Maybe I am wrong about this. Harvey would be a good one to ask, he knows a lot about the transmission. Joe

Can't say for the Euro/JDM models, but the US market 4EAT has a parking pawl that engages a gear set at the rear of the transmission - I "think" the location is at the gear set where the transmission output hooks up to send power to the front differential. Would have to take the extension housing off to tell for sure. |

Thanks Lee.
More or less what I was trying to say, and I imagine the Euro/JDM parking detente is the same as the US one. What's the bike? Looks a bit like a Honda CB 750 or something of that vintage, but hard to say with the size of the pic. Joe

Very cool!
Really nice Lee, thanks for the link.
Disc brakes are pretty radical! Unless I miss my guess, they are made from pretty hard, almost stainless, steel, with the result that they do a very bad job of stopping the bike, particularly in the rain. Then again, by the look of it, you don't ride it in the rain much anyway. Very, very nice machine. Thanks for sharing. Joe

Brakes: It was the only year to have them front & back (72-74 had front only, drums on both ends before 72). Plated with hard chrome by the OEM, Norton-Villiers-Triumph. Stopping deficiencies have been fixed by enterprising owners by sleeving the master cylinder down from 5/8" to 13mm (and using Kawasaki internal parts). Turns out the rotor material has little to do with stopping power (given proper pad material). The two variables are the diameter of the rotor, and the ratio of the hydraulic piston in the master cylinder to the piston(s) in the brake caliper - all else is almost exclusively a heat related issue. |

to get this thread back on track, it is mearly the load of the transmission keeping the shifter from going. Say you are on a slight to larger slant, the transmission is what holding it still so when you go to engage into gear, it will take a little effort to get it out of park. This will eventually hurt urs trans, so from now on, put your car in neutral, pull the parking brake up until the car is firmly held, the continue to put the car in park. The sticking of the shifter will stop.
