AIRBAG light... will it halt an inspection?

New Hampshire, if it matters.

Is it typical if the AIRBAG light is illuminated an inspection station will reject?

I tried pulling codes, and I got two long one short, and two short. I think that's codes 21 and 2. Can't find anywhere to ID those codes =(

Haven't really done much to the car before that light came on. It was parked. Nothing hit it. I was running it fine for days. Then suddenly, tada! Airbag light.

I need an inspection!

Re: AIRBAG light... will it halt an inspection?

FROM SVX_COMMUTER'S OLD LOCKER:

AIR BAG Codes (general only, the FSM has more complete diagnostic procedures.)

2 Short in: front sensor harness, Airbag main harness, and module harness, roll over connector, or faulty control unit.
3 Open circuit in: Front sensor harness or front sensor unit.
11 Fuse #8 blown, faulty control unit, open circuit in main or body harness.
12 Roll connector circuit is open, faulty CU, open AIRBAG codes continued for 1992 SVX circuit in main or module harness.
13 Short in Roll connector circuit or main harness or module harness, faulty CU
14 AB2 & AB7, AB3 & AB8, AB4 AB5 AB6 to CU not connected properly.
21 Airbag Control Unit (CU) is faulty.
23 Power supply short in: main harness, Front sensor harness, roll connector. Module harness damaged, Faulty CU.
31 Fuse #16 blown, open circuit in body harness or main harness. Faulty CU.
Light stays ON- light is faulty, harness to light is faulty, ground circuit fault, faulty CU, AB1 & B58 not connected properly.
Light remains OFF- Blown fuse #15, body harness circuit open, light is faulty, main harness is faulty, faulty CU.

Hmmm..... that doesn't sound good. Is it possible trying to jam the Navigation unit in there, it pulled at the Airbag CU harness??? But then, why now, after having it in there for a year......

Re: AIRBAG light... will it halt an inspection?

First, disconnect the battery.

Wait at least twenty minutes.

Remove the drivers airbag, carefully.

Re install it.

Reconnect the battery.

See if the code goes away.

Re: AIRBAG light... will it halt an inspection?

Is that a common cure? Mine's been on since I owned it. I disconnected the little light module for the safety check when I bought it. I changed the CU and the codes changed.

Re: AIRBAG light... will it halt an inspection?

I'll be the third with an Airbag problem...So mine has never worked since I owned the car but now want to get it fixed. My airbag light stays illuminated and every time I place the 15a fuse in the kickpanel fuse box, the fuse blows...
so can someone tell me what would be the first thing to look for trying to diagnose this problem? I don't want to have to replace the CU if it doesn't make sense to....is this a harness short problem?

I've spent eight or more hours checking air bag codes, following the FSM.
After all that I tried the easiest thing possable.
A new air bag.
Twice now that has fixed it.
Just trying to help.

Advice is always a gift.

I also realized that my negative battery terminal clamp isn't doing it's job anymore since I had it rigged with a supporting 4 gauge. I've gone out and bought a new post and wire ends and will see if it was a continuity problem. That may also explain to some degree the awful starting issue I've been having, although I think that's far more likely the ignition switch component dying on me.

I need to remove the radio to diagnose a ground hum, so we'll see if the connector the unit itself is not fully seated, and I can do further diag of voltage and resistance between there and the battery. If this ends up being fine, I will give the main airbag a shot.... err, attempt.

Can anyone tell me exactly which metal box in radio area is the airbag CU? Will it be obvious? I've never intentionally looked.

Re: AIRBAG light... will it halt an inspection?

I can't say for certain what New Hampshire's laws are, but I know in NJ they don't care about an airbag light, as long as the air bags are physically there. So if the system fails, you don't need to get it fixed, but for example you can't replace the steering wheel with one that doesn't have an airbag in it because that would be disabling a safety device instead of just something that doesn't work that they don't care about.

Check the connector behind the driver's kick panel. My light is coming on because that connector has loosened up. I believe it's a big yellow one.

If you are in an inspection time line situation, maybe take the bulb out?

Make sure every time you work on the Airbag system you have had the battery disconnected for at least ten/twenty minutes!!!!!

my airbag light stays lit, but when the outside temps are approx. 70 or higher, the airbag light goes off.

The airbag deploys at 200 MPH and with your face about an inch away as you reach for some pretty yellow wires it takes your head cleanly off,

or snaps your neck and then dents the roof with your head..

And we don't want no dented roofs.

Re: AIRBAG light... will it halt an inspection?

The yellow plug under the kick panel was my problem. I held in together tightly with a zip tie. The light went away for me.
