Help!

I was accelerating the other day and all of a sudden i lost all power to the wheels but the engine was still running and whenever i hit the gas it wasnt catching. So i turned the engine off when i pulled over and turned the car off i couldnt turn the car back on, sounds like the starter is engaging but not catching anything. I want to know would it just be the starter wheel or the entire tranny went up?

Probably should be explained a little better... Maybe add an explanation to each sentence that would let us all know what is really happening?
Thanks

Re: Help!

I was accelerating and then i lost power to the wheels and the engine was just revving.

The car wouldnt turn back on after turning it off
could hear the starter working but didnt seem to catch onto anything

I dont know whats wrong, Either the whole transmission is messed or
just starter wheel?

Anyone have a clue?

Re: Help!

Sounds like the flexplate let go. The flexplate joins the engine to the trans, just like the flywheel in a manual. I think this is a common problem. However it's a major PAIN to get to. Come monday the Gurus will be back to help you out with how-to's. But just to let you know, either the engine, or the trans has to come most of the way out to fix this.

You picked a bad time to have probs...the weekend of the big Reading Meet.

Hope this helps.

It DOES sound like the flexplate failed.
This is what one looks like.

Re: Help!

well thats good news better than hearing that i'm in the market for a full new tranny. Where can i get another flexplate from? is it specific to this tranny or does it share the same as another suby tranny?
Should i also check and make sure the torque converter is messed? or would it affect it?

You can get a flexplate from the dealership or its cheaper from online sites like subaruparts.com, just make sure to also get the "flexplate reinforcement". It is an extra piece that gives the flexplate more strength.
Flexplate is $30 from subaruparts.com and the reinforcement is about $18, Dealership prices will be a little higher more than likely.

If the flexplate is broken/cracked, then no. The Starter's gears are connected to a gear on the Torque Converter and the flexplate is bolted to the Torque converter which is then bolted to the bellhousing of the engine. So basically, starter turns the TC which also turns the flexplate which then turns and starts the motor.

Don't quote me but I am pretty sure they are they same thing. Can any one confirm? I have a good torque converter that I just pulled for my 5 speed swap if interested. Cheap and can probably ship for under 20 bucks from Nevada. PM me if you are interested. I also have a starter in working condition as well. Same deal.

If some one can confirm on weather or not a driveplate and flex plate are the same that would be great. Hope this helps.

I have never seen a reinforcment plate damaged.
I have never had to replace one.
