My 92's top speed
I got a chance to top out my '92 on an open road this weekend. The speedo read about 150, but I don't trust that. Its got 4.44 gears, so 3000 rpm = about 72 mph. The tach was at 6000 rpm when I got the 150 reading on the speedo. My calculations say that I was actually going about 144. 72/3000 = .024mph/rev * 6000 rpm = 144 mph. Did I do the calculation correctly? does that sound about right for a '92 with 113,000 miles on it? Would these cars go this fast with stock gears?
I'm glad to say the car was really stable at this speed and didn't even push the dipstick out of the tube. It might have went a little faster but I had to slow down for my turn. Steve

It could be the PCV valve. Which is common since no one changes them becasue its kind of hard.

Mine does it, but only on occasion, and I have never seen it up after running hard.
Someone had mentioned it before, and said it was excess pressures. But that only figures with hard runs. Maybe just excess at startup. |

Pressure in the engine gets high, not sure how high, but an old pcv valve will cause the dipstick to rise occasionally. Also, it's good to replace the old hardened rubber O-ring on the stick. I replaced mine and my dipstick has remained seated in the tube nicely.
Try the quicker fix: O-ring......cut the old one out with a razor...it'll be hard like plastic...at least mine was. |

Small fingas help and it's kind of tricky....just need a crows foot or a special bent wrench (as talked about in other threads). It's also righty-loosy and lefty-tighty...since the pcv valve sits upside down. I found mine was also really torqued tight..I think it could be because the heating of the two different materials in the block and the valve. |

I got mine to hit 140 on the way home from my last dragstrip trip, but I got to my exit before it could go higher. I had my wife and tools with me too and it was still climbing when I let off. I could see 150 to 155 happening easy.

Speedometer readings are good for estimating and avoiding speeding tickets. To my knowledge there has never been a certified top speed for a stock SVX in excess of 145 mph.

Is this something I can trust my local Subaru dealer parts counter to look up?

Just buy a pack of O rings from the hardware store, it will be MUCH cheaper BTW, I remember one time last year before I had any mods on my SVX, I was on a sanctioned strip of road, and the SVX easily hit 140 MPH, it was still pulling strong, but I got nervous and hit the brakes after that, i'm sure that the SVX can go over 150 easily. I remember reading somewhere that it was geared to be able to reach over 172, but I don't think a stock SVX has enough HP to be able to go that fast....

What's the difference between the euro and the US model SVX? The biggest is the VTD trans and possibly the # of cats in the exhaust system (depending on emission requirements in the country). Otherwise, our cars are very similar in terms of power output, weight and Cd (US is 0.290, euro is 0.285). A Swedish member, Sonar took part in a police sanctioned top speed race where your car accelerated over a 5 kilometer (3.125 miles for us Yanks) and at the end the police recorded your speed on a radar gun: http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/show...threadid=19251 Sonar reached 164+mph the second time he attended the event, and 166+mph the first year!!!! And his speed was verified by the Swedish police! -Chike

Sure, they will probably have it in stock. If you like, go to Subaruparts.com and the p/n: 806908080 is the O-ring at $1.14 and shipping would be $1.99 |
