Question Re: Speedometer quit

2nd part of message:

In Lee's Locker, on page 16/37 of the 3rd transaxle section there is an assembly #15 shown in the exploded diagram and labeled revolution sensor: is that the VSS1? Held on with a single bolt.

I guess I really don't understand the entire concept: there are two Vehicle Speed Sensors AND? an actual speedometer drive, as in a cable?

One sensor (which one? VSS1 or VSS2?) reads the front drive, the other the rear drive (I guess it would have to be the other, huh? duh!) and send signals to the AWD system...

It appears replacing the VSS2 is (can be?) considerably more involved if it is mechanically broken rather than just being inoperative (as in having to remove the tranny, etc.?)...

Thanks!

Re: Speedometer quit

If your speedometer and odometer do not work, it is either VSS2 or the plastic gears inside the differential. If the speedometer quit or reads "off", but the odometer reads proper (1mi=1mi) then your cluster is bad.
VSS1 is the sensor on the back of the trans which helps the TCU decide how much power to send to the rear. This does not affect the speedometer or odometer.

Driving with a failed VSS2 will not harm the car in any way.

There is no speedometer cable on an SVX.

Question Re: Speedometer quit: VSS2 Part#

My info is that the correct SOA part # for the VSS2 is 24029AA281.

Please advise ASAP!

Thanks!

p.s. Finally got the Select Monitor to throw the code 33!

Red face CORRECT part # for VSS2

Otherwise officially known as "SPEED SENSOR AY", the CORRECT part # is 85082PA010.

My previous posting is flat WRONG: that part # (24029AA281) is the entire "TRANSMISSION WIRING HARNESS SPORD".

Interestingly it is a very complex harness and a buy @ $113 or so (I had a discount and that price did include shipping): the VSS2 costs over $225 @ LI$T price!

Sorry for the confusion...

Lightbulb Re: Speedometer quit

UPDATE: The VSS2 is rather easily accessed from the top of the car (passenger fender side) and only requires removing the wiring pigtail (and THAT'S a fun job since it is very hard to see it while your left hand is down there) and the sensor itself with a 17mm open end wrench.

My VSS2 was in about 5 parts: the sensor body, the shaft itself, which was broken in two pieces & was loose (with twisted metal on the tip, almost 3 full turns!), the rubber ring & the metal ring had come apart, and there were a couple small shreds of rubber sliced off as well. When insterting the shaft back into the sensor it was as if the part that actually rotates within the body had frozen. Interesting since there is ATF present which one would hope acts as a lube.

Make sure you get all the sensor pieces out before threading in the new one. I used a small magnet and part of a paper towel.

Car came right up with no CEL and speedo & odo worked right away.

Cheers!
