transfer case, clutches etc.

I just put a tube of Mr. Shudder(their is also a product called Shudder Fix) in my auto transmission fluid and the shudder and binding is gone. I drove around 40 miles in town this morning, making sharp u turns and no shudder or binding. Great stuff. Got it at a transmission specialty place. Bill

That's great. Now as long as Mr. Shudder replaces your worn clutches while he's in there you'll be all set

I understand that a bad duty solenoid c will cause binding, but will a worn clutch do the same? My understanding was that a worn clutch will just slip or not engage at all. My wife's old Legacy used to spin the front wheels considerably before the rears engaged with a *thunk*.

To replace the transfer clutch? No. The extension housing comes off without removing the transmission from the car.

But you do have to support the transmission, because the rear mount bolts to the extension housing.

By far most of the binding we see is caused by the clutch itself, not the solenoid.

Can you explain to me why this is?

Ok, the official response:

"When the transfer clutch assembly wears, the plates make grooves on the drum. This causes binding."

Well, that's very...interesting. If you can get a more detailed answer than that, I'd appreciate it. If not, that's okay.

I'm just curious why the plates wear grooves into the drum and whether the drum then has to be replaced or repaired.

It just doesn't make any sense to me. A bad solenoid causing excess pressure on the clutch would mean that the clutch plates' teeth would be binding on the drum and possibly cutting groozes into it, but I don't understand how a clutch that is simply worn could cause these grooves.

Thanks for taking the time to ask, though. I do appreciate it.

Sorry, I'm a transmission idiot. I wish I could add to that explaination but I can't. The guys are pretty busy and that's the best I could get at the moment

Duty C replacement, need housing gasket?

I have been driving (without binding) in front wheel drive mode and bought a Duty C solenoid. Reading this post I wondered, do I need a gasket for the extension housing?

My tranny has about 20K and began binding on slow corners, popped in the fuse and no binding.

For the $2.48 it costs on subaruparts.com I would be changing the gasket while I'm in there!

Extension gasket part number?

I looked on the Subaru parts site and they did not have the exploded digram up of the parts, anyone happen to know what the part number is?

Many thanks.

Jerry

Has anyone posted a blow-by-blow of the Duty C repacement experience?

David's right - the gasket is so cheap you might as well get one just to have it. There's a chance you're going to rip it when you remove the extension housing.
