Well fortunately I do feel better this morning. I have yet another question that I doubt has come up before:

Daytime running lights

They used to come on when you shifted the tranny out of Park. Can anyone think of a way to reimplement DRL with the 5spd?

You got me on that one.

Maybe just a relay to turn them on whenever the ignition is "ON"

That would be ok but then the lights would be on when I'm trying to start the car and that's 200W wasted on lights when they could be cranking the engine.

Then again...who knows what gear the DRL unit thinks the car is in anyway. For all I know it may not even think it's in park and turn the lights on automatically.

Day 4

We didn't get much time to spend on the SVX today but we did manage to make some progress and even bolt the WRX clutch/brake pedal assembly into the SVX. Some cutting into the firewall is still necessary to allow for the clutch master cylinder.

I've attached a picture showing the position of the clutch in relation to the large grommett for all the wires.

My pedals pictures

Here is one of the pics I promised you. I have the rest on my FTP. let me know if you want to see them.

You may also want to check out my thread in the Mod Mania forum. It was called My 5 Speed install. I put a lot of info in there.

Day 5: Pedals

We cut a piece off the SVX brake assembly to weld to the end of the WRX assembly. This allows us to use all the bolts to securely mount the pedals.

I've also elongated the hole normally for the large grommett and wires to pass though the firewall. This will give me enough room to allow the wires to pass through as well as mount the clutch master cylinder.

Still hoping Dan comes through for me with the bracket that was missing off the back of the transmission to mount the shifter anchor.

Tomorrow there will be some major reassembly.

Question for anyone who can answer:

What is the solution for mounting the starter when the original was one bolt and one stud/nut but the WRX one is 2 bolts? There's no hole in the engine for the second bolt for the starter.

p.s. pedals are in!

Can you get a pic of the starter, and the starter hole in the tranny?
Since I didn't use a WRX tranny, I'd have to have something to look at, to be of any help.

I think the trick is to thread the hole in the tranny and install a stud then drill out the bolt hole in the starter so it will slide over the new stud. I guess you could also use a bolt but either way you will have to thread the hole in the tranny .

BTW: If you seperate the wires in the grommet you only need like 4 or 5 wires out of the whole thing. The rest I just tucked behind the heater box.

That's what my dad did before I even woke up this morning.

Once the tranny is in place how can it be removed? There's no access to any of the bolts and there looks like a snap-ring that prevents you from simply removing the tranny. It almost looks like you would have to remove the steering rack to gain access to the bolts.

Thanks for the help so far!!

if once you get it out for a test run and yuor getting interferece(80% you will) check the spacing on hte tranny to the tranny mount, All it took inbetween those to was THREE WASHERS to prevent a severe impact bewteen the driveshaft and the shifter linkage. Also dont forget to space the center CV 3/16". Those are the only major problems that i ran into.
Sounds like your well on your way already, im excited for you, you wont be dissapointed!

Thanks for the info Phil!

I was just going to ask for the proper spacing for the center joint on the drive shaft as well as what the spacing should be between the drive shaft and the tranny.

My dad is guessing about 3/4"

He's getting an adaptor made for the end of the driveshaft in front of the rear diff and we need to know the optimal thickness for it.

The length thickness in tranny's is 2 3/8" but the adaptor may only be 1 3/4"

Who knows the proper spacing between the driveshaft and tranny?

Day 6 is done.

Tranny is in place, clutch works, starter is mounted, pedals all move freely.

We went to relatives for yummy supper - ribs, buffalo steak, caesar salad, fancy baked potatos

Still need to do the tranny wiring, mount driveshaft, make spacer for driveshaft, modify tranny crossmember, modify shifter linkages, put interior/exhaust back together.

I'm sure there's lots more stuff I have to do besides what I listed.

I'm still waiting for an answer to my previous post.

im not so sure we undrestand? Do you mean how big of a spacer do you need to have machined? Just measure the old 4eat, the measure the new tranny, and get a center section machined that is the difference. Mine was 2 inches exactly, but i would do it just to be safe.
make sure that you are installing the spacer between the driveshadft and the rear end, otherwise you would have tomove the hole CV joint, and there is defintly not room for that.

I've posted a drawing I did to have my spacer made in my locker at:
http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/fil...k369/13188.bmp
You'll have to move the carrier bearing forward the same amount as the spacer on the driveshaft.

Hope this helps.
