Front Stabilizer Issue

The upper part where the stabilizer is bolted broke off. The stabilizer is now just dangling. What was the stabilizer bolted onto that I need to replace? Thanks for your help.

Re: Front Stabilizer Issue

The flange broke off the strut? Or the top ball joint of the endlink (that's what that gold-ish coloured part is called) pulled out? If the flange broke off, you're kind of SOL and will need a new front shock to fix it. If it's only the link that separated then you just need to replace that, although they aren't cheap (~$75).

Re: Front Stabilizer Issue

You might be right. I took it to the mechanic. He said I need to have the whole axle replaced. He quoted me at $450. Does that sound like a legitemate price?

Thanks

No. This connector runs from your stabilizer bar, under the car, to the other side. On both struts, they connect to those little "ear" on the strut body.

Your CV axles are completely different. And if they DO need to be relaced, you can get remanned ones for under $80 per axle and probably put em in yourself, or have a friend put em in for much cheaper.

I don't see anything on that stabilizer linkage broken in that picture... is this an old picture prior to breaking?

Re: Front Stabilizer Issue

I'm going to guess that the tab on the strut body broke off (been there, done that, twice). You can weld them back on, just be careful with the amount of heat (use MIG, not a torch).

Re: Front Stabilizer Issue

Yeah I think you're right Bill. I'm probably going to have it welded.

If I choose to replace it, what part would I actually need to replace and how much do you think it would cost?

I have attached the actual pics. Thanks again

Re: Front Stabilizer Issue

You'd have to replace the strut. The problem is the new struts have been sitting on a shelf for 17 years and fail very quickly. They're about $80.00. Remove the little tab from the end link and get it welded, you'll save a bundle on parts and labour. No need to replace a strut that isn't blown with one which will die in a year or so.

Re: Front Stabilizer Issue

Welding to a strut is dicey business. Heat it up too much, give it a weak spot, and the strut can explode. It may be possible to weld onto the remaining flange though.

As for the axle, the minor rub marks from the swaybar is no reason to replace it.
