Stop lamp light

Hey guys,

Having an issue with my stop lamp light on the instrument panel lighting up at times, while the lights all work, it seems to be irregular and most of the time I noticed it goes off when the car is cold or its cold outside... any fixes, or things I should check about this?

Thanks in advance,
-Sov13t.

That's the float switch in the brake fluid reservoir letting you know it's time for brake pads.

Pop the hood, remove the brake master cylinder cap, look at the diaphragm,
and check this link.

I think you've got the wrong warning light, sperry...

The Stop Lamp light allegedly lights when one of the brake lights doesn't. Unfortunately, lately, I've been seeing mine come on now and then, even with four new functioning bulbs, just like Sov13t described.

I haven't pursued it, but I liked <this post>.

He's not wrong it comes on when fluid is low and when you have a bad bulb

Or you can go to the write up in the How-To Documents (that was just added) for more information. It is under Brakes. Or, you can GO HERE to see it. Good luck.

I'll have to take your word on this; you've got plenty more SVX seat time than I do.

I am left wondering, though, why the BRAKE! light doesn't handle this, and how the STOP LAMP light would illuminate from low brake fluid, when the brake fluid switch isn't part of its circuit, per the service manual.

EDIT: Just checked my brake cap diaphragm. It's happily inside its cap.

The stop lamp checker (which controls the STOP light in the dash) uses the amperage difference between the trunk panel and the two body mounted stop lights to determine if a bulb is bad. Very similar design to a GFCI outlet in your house.

If you have unmatched wattage bulbs, the difference in amperage can be enough to trigger the checker even if all four bulbs work.

Bulbs are dirt cheap so when I have one go out, I replace all four with the same brand.

Here is how the stop lamp checker circuit operates:
The rear stop light sensor works by separating the stop lamps into two circuits, each with two bulbs. The two center panel lights are one circuit and the two outside lights are the other.

The two circuits each go into a sensor and each current draw is measured. If it is not in balance (ie, one circuit has two bulbs, the other only has one working) the STOP lamp on the dash is triggered and illuminates.

The manual tells you the only "fooled" instance. If one bulb from the center panel is burned out and one bulb on an outer light is burned out, the indicator will not come on. Sometimes, after one bulb in the circuit causes the STOP light to illuminate, the second bulb burning out in the same circuit would cause the STOP light to go out.

It also has a fail-safe system so if all four bulbs are burned out (zero current flow) it triggers the STOP light.

If you put higher wattage bulbs in the center panel, but regular bulbs in the outer lights, it will trigger an indicator, even though all four bulbs light up.

If you replace your lights with LEDs, the light will trigger because the LEDs use next to no current, so the sensor thinks all four bulbs are burned out.

Had this too, I pulled the bulbs used some contact cleaner and presto, havent seen it since then. Easy fix if it works for you, if not back to the other options. I always try the easiest, simplest solution first and work my way up.
