the beauty of AWD

we got dumped on with snow, and i worked until midnight. the little SVX (with snow tires ) clawed and fought its way through the unplowed, unsalted roads to get me home safe. saw all kinds of cars getting sideways and spinning - they must have been shocked to see the loud little sportscar driving by them so effortlessly.

Subarus rock!

My Avenger doesnt do too bad either

I especially like passing people who are going ~55 mph on the very slightly snowcovered freeway at about 72 or so. Thank God for Blizzaks!

Worst?

I would say my Bridgestone Potenzas.... Almost scary at times! Still, I have been able to get out of "dangerous" situations... but all four wheels spinning uncontrollably and questions about my tires will have to wait until next winter (after my differential is repaired). About 800.00 to fix the Diff and 500.00 (or so) to replace tires...(where's the old GL when you need it????)

i have some cheap snow tires for the SVX, but i just ordered some Continental ContiExtremeContacts for my wife's WRX, based on several reviews on this site and Tire Rack. they are on sale for $75/each at Tire Rack. better than $500, but i don't know how long they'll be on sale. i don't know what Potenzas you have, but the stock RE-92's that came on the WRX are just plain dangerous to drive on, in any condition.

You should try falken azenis in snow - I was plugging along at 30mph spinning all 3 tires in a half inch of slush/freezing rain.
Very bad. Horrible even.

get some good all-seasons, or better yet, some snow tires. the SVX is a little tank with the right shoes.

Even with cheap old shoes, it's pretty impressive.

ya.. all-season tires should be called "three-season" tires in the snow belt..

virtually ANYTHING with sipes on it (i think that's what they're called) will offer a TREMENDOUS amount of control in the snow versus an "all-season" shoe..

I will add Potenza RE730's to the worst list. I drove them in the snow ONCE. That was the last time the SVX ever drove in the snow. A few weeks ago we got a suprize snow storm at work, I tried to drive the SVX to the end of the road but slid about 50ft from 10MPH So I turned around and took my bosses Jeep home .

On another note I have Dunlop Rover AT's on my Legacy and Loyal and they are the bomb in the snow. I don't think they come in SVX sizes thoe.

Woke up this morning to another sheet of ice. Looks like the svx is parked for another day - or at least until the sun comes out and melts it all off.

The azenis have zero sipes.
azenis

I love freezing rain.
I could play ice hockey in the street - thats how nice the ice is.

I have Bridgestone Potenza RE950's on my GTP and they are phenomenal in the snow. I've even been able to make it up Mandi's hill (1 mile, probably 15% grade) a few times when the SVX wouldn't do it. That was back when she had those ridiculous Dunlop SP 8000s. Her new SP A2's seem to handle the snow pretty well. My Potenza's make me mad sometimes though cause they really resist my attempts to drift through turns.
