Question auto trans compatability

Hi i own a 94 svx fwd. Now i have brought my car to my buddy who owns a transmission shop, not only has he never worked on one of these before but has no knowledge of the parts. Now it is aparent i will need a new transmission soon and i was wondering what other cars have the identical transmission. Now I know the 4eat was used in many cars i am talking about a direct bolt on. also i am pretty sure that the awd transmission can be used in a fwd model can anyone verify this for me. thanx for your response.

I don't think an AWD transmission would work in a FWD SVX without at least minor modification, since the AWD tranny has the whole extension housing the transfer clutch and everything.

Having a FWD SVX means that you can probably use a FWD tranny from any FWD Impreza or Legacy because you don't have to match the diffs. But the gear ratios be the same as your original tranny and the clutches won't be quite as durable. They will bolt up, though.

I am useing a 96 Impreza AWD tranny to replace my 92 SVX AWD one. it is a direct bolt in. I found it at a local salvage yard for $650.00, with the rear end too. A FWD one should work also.

the AWD tranny will work, just trade the tail shaft with the back of the front drive tranny. the axle ratios are going to be different from car to car. A AWD 90 legacy has a 4.30 ratio and a 92 AWD SVX has a 3.93 I think.

Exclamation Watch the numbers you're throwing around here

Legacy final drive ratios can be 3.90:1 or 4.11:1 (front and rear).

The SVX (USDM) final drive ratio is 3.545:1 (front and rear). The SVX (JDM) is 3.70:1.

Imprezas (excl WRX) can be 3.90:1 or 4.11:1.

Forrester can be 4.11:1 or 4.44:1

WRX (manual) is 3.90:1 front and 3.545:1 rear.

Not sure about the auto WRX.

And I already explained that. Since you have a FWD SVX, I think you can probably use any FWD Legacy, Impreza or SVX tranny. An Impreza or Legacy tranny won't have the same gear ratios as an SVX, and the clutches aren't as beefy, but they will bolt right up. These guys are arguing final drive ratios, which you don't have to worry about as much because you don't have to match front and rear diffs.

Not quite. The WRX is 3.9:1, but this is accomplished through a 3.9:1 front diff and a 3.54:1 rear diff and a 1.1:1 step down gear in the tranny for the rear drive.

i need the years of the imprezza and legacy that are a match. I am sure that a 76 legacy isn't runing the same tranny.the ratios don't matter

It's not that simple. Ratios are broken down by model (Brighton, L, LS), transmisison type (auto and manual), engine displacement (1.8, 2.0, 2.2, 2.5, 3.0) and year.

Your best bet is to go to your local dealer and pull their service manuals for review. You could also pull covers and count teeth on the rear diffs and match them to the trans if you know the front diff ratio.

Good luck,
Todd

But there was no '76 Legacy. The Legacy, Impreza and SVX all showed up in Subaru's line-up within a couple years of eachother. The Legacy appeared for 1990, the SVX in 1992 and the Impreza in 1993. But it wasn't until the 1997 model year that all Subarus came with AWD standard.

So what you're looking for is a '90-'96 FWD Legacy or a '93-'96 FWD Impreza. Those are all the years that FWD models of those cars were produced, which is why I said any FWD Legacy, Impreza or SVX tranny.

The SVX was only built with FWD in '94 and '95.

i can also use a awd tranny as longas i swap out the tail shaft for the back plate on the fwd. so as long as the trannys bolt right up i just want to know all the years they were the same. sorry for being a pain in the ass but i don't want to buy a new tranny and not have it fit.thanx again
