Question final drive

the final drive gear. essentially its making my car a 5 spd auto? is it supposed to shift into final even at less than highway speeds?

im counting 4 shifts whenever i accelerate and hold 40 or higher. this is normal?

The last "Shift" you feel, is accually the torque converter locking in, to give the tranny direct drive off the motor.

Oh yes I says it's a five speed auto That is not actually correct as it has old 4 speeds but I say it has 5 speeds. Mopar used to say that the 3 speed auto trannys were 4 speeds and they counted on the TC lock-up as the advertised 4th gear.

Back to the SVX, if you consider ONLY the engine speed to axle speed ratios, then it's a five speed.

I used to think that mine was a 5 speed when it had the auto in it... And hey, now look at it, it is a 5 speed... Guess all ya have to do is believe, even if everyone tells ya that it's a 4 speed...

read the this, then turn to the next page and it briefly explains what lock-up is.
