Have you tried replacing the "o" ring between the reservoir and the pump?

If this is faulty, air gets in the fluid and causes cavitation, which makes it seem like the pump is gone.

Part number is 062610110, it only costs a few pence and is easily fitted. There is a How-to on the site, find it and read it.

For the cost involved, I would try this first, what have you got to lose except a couple of hours work?

Also make sure you refill it with ATF, not power steering fluid. Service garages are always making this mistake, refilling with power steering fluid or topping up with it. If your fluid in the reservoir is brown, it is incorrect. Fluid should be pink. ATF has better heat handling capabilities.

Does the belt continue to turn when the pump stops? Perhaps it's something like the tensioner pulley bearing failing or the crank pulley separating?

Question

Good to know Supertole.

It has always been maintained[well, in the USA anyway] that there are two power steering pump types available, as there are two types of power steering; one type is for rev-sensitive steering, and the other type is for speed-sensitive steering, which is on the top models.

Any of the pumps I have seen, they have always been the one type. So I am wondering if perhaps the pump proper, what the Americans call the "core", is actually the same for all types? Maybe the difference is explained by what type of sensor they have connected in the side pipes?

Does anybody know what is the case with these pumps?

Joe
