In 2, you go up to 2nd gear, but if you are accelerating hard, it will shift back into 1st gear. In 3, you go up to 3rd gear if speed permits (40 does permit this), but, as I said, if you're accelerating harder than normal, perhaps while going up a hill, it will downshift back to 2nd gear, until the computer decides to put it back into 3rd. I'm guessing you just felt the car upshift to 3rd.
