For an auto, the Legacy 92 to 97 with a diff change to 4.1.
Outback same years with a diff change to 4.44.
The later boxes with the spin on filter, are different doesn't work with the TCU.

Manual, same years WRX box, works with the original diff.

First generation Outback was '95 to '99. I had 2 of the '97s. I have the transmission (4.44) and diff gears in my '92 parts car from my '97 Outback LTD.
The second generation Outback started in late '99 and the tranny does not work on the SVX.

Re: Transmissions that will work in the SVX

when you say dif change , do you mean I have to pull the whole rear axel or just the gears? And I am getting the whole transmission from where it bolts to the engine and the driveline?

Re: Transmissions that will work in the SVX

Yes you need the rear diff out of the same car. The Legacy gears, have to be fitted into the SVX diff, as the SVX diff is a Viscous LSD, and the SVX axles will only fit to the SVX center, they won't fit into the Legacy center.

The 4.44 geared transmissions typically hold up much better than the SVX transmission especially if you can find one under 100,000 miles. The 4.44 gearing also has better acceleration off the line but the trade off is that the engine will rev higher at highway speeds.

Re: Transmissions that will work in the SVX

So I have found a unmolested 96 legacy in the junkyard that I was thinking of getting, that would be a 4.1 gearing right ? is that whats in my 92 SVX ?

Re: Transmissions that will work in the SVX

Ok, I how have my SVX, took her for a spin today and it seems like its gutless, like possibly the trans is no good, I just want to know before heading towards a 97 Legacy auto trans, this will work in the SVX as long as I take the ring and pinion gears from the differential ....right ...?
