help: power steering whine

did some research and cant find an answer.

In the morning when i start the car, there is a "whine" coming from the engine bay. After it warms up the whine goes away but as soon i start to drive it and turn the wheels, the whine is there. i put the car in park and it whines. this leads me to believe steering pump so i checked the pump and it is fine. any ideas? i replaced the steering fluid less then 3k miles ago. bad pump? the car is a little hard to turn, but i blame the age and weight and i havent drove another svx for a long while to tell the differences.

Thanks in advance

Re: help: power steering whine

Did you put steering fluid in or ATF like it's supposed to have?

And how did you "check" the power steering pump?

Re: help: power steering whine

Is the "whine" the belt squealing against the power steering pulley?

Dextron II or Dextron III ATF. It tells you on the reservoir cap for the power steering fluid.

Regular P/S steering fluid is a no-no.

On a side note, why no regular P/S fluid in our cars?

Because the pumps and rack were made to use ATF as hydraulic and lubrication.
PS fluid was created in the late 70's for no good reason really. Up until then, every MF required ATF or some euro brands may have already switched to a special hydraulic oil in the power steering system.
PS fluid does not give the proper lubrication and protection to the steering system in a vehicle meant for ATF.

You could disconnect one of the low-pressure lines to drain it out. Just don't let the pump run dry.

Re: help: power steering whine

Getting back to the whine only when cold -- check your hoses to make sure they are tight at each end. You may be drawing air into the system, which causes bubbles in the fluid. Once the engine/fluid warms up, the noise goes away.

Re: help: power steering whine

My guess it is the O-ring under the fluid tank - go to the How-To Docs to see how to do it.

I second that suggestion. That procedure can be found HERE

The good thing is that you are emptying the reservoir of your PS fluid so that you can add fresh ATF. No more than 15 minutes.
