Question aftermarket power antenna

http://www.pepboys.com/product/detai...rior/antennas/

Has anyone used this product? The web site says it fits an SVX. Wondering if that's correct...

Re: aftermarket power antenna

For that price you could replace just your mast, if that is the only thing wrong.

part# 86322PA010 $55.40

Plus the $10.95 shipping. $55.40+ $10.95= $66.35 vs $69.99= $3.34

Michael, no disrespect intended, but have you personally replaced a Subaru SVX mast?
Twenty year old plastic/screws/grease/gears/etc./etc.

It should take at least an hour less if the product actually fits.

Re: aftermarket power antenna

The better question is what would give the best reception. I was surprised at how mediocre my reception is with the new Pioneer radio. It has the top of the line tuner from Pioneer which is known for its tuners.

Re: aftermarket power antenna

Yes I have replaced one, and it wasn't as bad as it sounds. That was at least 6 years ago tho.

Re: aftermarket power antenna

My concern would be the shape of the antenna motor assembly. The OEM one has a bend to it so that motor sits more horizontal. Would a straight one fit in the space?

I did one on an SVX years ago when the person broke their mast and it was not bad at all.

However the one that just changed in my 253k Pearlie was a plastic breaking, rusted screw PITA.

Re: aftermarket power antenna

I found a used OEM one on ebay for $30 + shipping. I'll let you know how it goes.

Re: aftermarket power antenna

I've replaced a mast, including manually rewinding the nylon leader. Definitely a pain, but if I can do it, anyone with the least bit of mechanical inclination and a bit of patience should have no problem.

I've also replaced the entire assembly with a used unit purchased from a member here, and that's definitely the option I'd first explore should the need arise again.

Re: aftermarket power antenna

Update...

The one I received via ebay was for a later year no doubt. The interface at the tip of the mast and the top are not quite right. My top did not fit right so its a no go. Think i will just bight the bullet and order a new one. It's only money...

I agree, the shape is what needs to match unless you buy a stationary antenna like a rubber pig tail.

So is this part/part number still available? Went looking at mine since it was stuck in the extended position when I bought it and looked bent. Plugged it in and it retracted half way, so the motor works. An aftermarket power ant doesn't look like it will fit due to the fender well being so close (guess that's why subaru designed the curve tube for it). Looks like the replacement mast would be the easier way to get this going again and probably the same price for a functional used one.

Re: aftermarket power antenna

So I got my OEM replacement and it works beautiful. Only thing is it has an additional grounding wire that was not on the original antenna, and there is not a handy screw to attach it to. So I left it hanging. Both AM and FM seem to be coming in fine w/o any engine noise. I could ground it with a new screw. Comments?
