Rack and pinion replacement

Can any one give me some guidance to replace?
Tricks?
Is there a write up?
Didn't find much in my research.

Mainly because they don't give any trouble.
Why are you replacing it?

Harvey.

Re: Rack and pinion replacement

No leaking is not rare.

They leak from the seals and the pipes. I do remember some body removing one, a long time ago, it wasn't easy.

Harvey.

Re: Rack and pinion replacement

You disconnect the lines, the 4 bolts holding the mounting clamps, the steering linkage, and the tie rod ends from the knuckles and it will come right out the bottom. You may need to move the exhaust to make it easier, mine is currently out so I don't know how much clearance there is.

Re: Rack and pinion replacement

I'm pretty sure its not possible to do it without dropping the exhaust. It was not a fun job to do. The hardest part for me was getting the clamps back on. If not lined up 100% the bolts would not go in. I recall caked on dirt from all the leakage mine.

Re: Rack and pinion replacement

Yeah it's a rubbish job. Exhaust has to be dropped, and it won't come out without some disassembly.

I had my rack removed and reconditioned earlier in the year. The fun part was that to warrant it, the reconditioners wanted to return it as a sealed unit... the only issue is since it won't come out in one piece, it can't go back in that way either...

The even funner part is that it's leaking again. It's coming back out under warranty next week...
