Transmission noise

I was heading to work in the morning with my 95 awd automatic with 220k and when I accelerated from a stop I heard a clunking sound. At first it sounded like something could have been loose like an axle popping out and not engaging. I took it home and checked out it later. When I drive at a very slow speed regardless of drive or reverse it will move and then feels almost like the Park is trying to re-engage. If I drift really slow it will move forward, then make the clunk and stop for a split second, then go again and will do it all over again. I'm not sure exactly what the problem is and any help is appreciated.

Re: Transmission noise

If that happened to me, my first guess would be the front differential has tanked.

Yep, front diff. Drain the oil and look for a nice lil tooth stuck to the drain plug

Re: Transmission noise

Thank you for the replies, I am assuming it is the front differential. I will examine it at some point in the future when I have time to do so.

Re: Transmission noise

Given that there may also be a problem with my transmission itself depending upon what exactly failed in the front differential I have read on here that the 4.44 transmission is a good choice to swap to. Which subaru's carried that transmission so I can start searching for prices to get an idea as to what I will end up spending to repair my svx?
