Thanks Mike. I work in Scranton, so it wouldn't be that bad a drive. Next time....

Re: Not again! Tick tick tick

Please help!
My car has been in the trans shop for about 2 months now.
I had the trans swaped out by my mechanic with a 98 Legacy (I was told).
Once that went bad, I brought it to the trans shop. This is where it is now.
The trans shop said it was a 98 forester transmission and not a 98 Legacy.
OK, no problem as long as it's a 4.44, correct?
Now the trans shop said they ordered the pump assembly for a 98 Forester transmission but it was wrong. They noticed the front differential is a 98 Forester but the trans is not! They believes it's from a 94 Legacy and Subaru only made that Transmission with that pump assembly for 6 months only. This is their reason for having a hard time finding parts.
Does any of this make any sense?

No, none of it makes sense as to what your current shop is saying. They likely bought a trans pump for a late 98 which would be different. The pump although might have a small change at one point, are interchangeable from any Phase 1 4eat.

Why are they buying a new pump in the first place? They *almost* never ever go bad. The only time I've ever heard or seen a phase 1 pump go bad was from improper trans/engine installs and typically not seating the TC properly.

Re: Not again! Tick tick tick

Is a 1994 Legacy a 4.44? I was promised a 1998 Legacy trans, Is it possible that (will not name names) sent me a 1994 Legacy Trans with a 1998 forester front differential instead? And yes, the trans was installed improperly. It was taken out three times (swap and flex plate twice) and the dowels were missing. I'm going to the shop tomorrow. What should I ask or look for?

How do they know or think the trans is from a 94?
It is *Possible*, however extremely unlikely since swapping differentials is a bit of a hassle and *Technically*, Subaru says it is not able to be done.

No.
The first 4.44 were either a 1995 or a 1996 Legacy Outback.

Re: Not again! Tick tick tick

The shop is Pocono Transmission center in Blakeslee, PA
This is family owned and operated. The owner's name is Tom. He is a very knowledgable and humble man and nice to deal with.
He has been doing transmissions since he was 14 years old and would like to get more information about the SVX from a member who has experience in the trans swap.
He knows for sure my SVX has a 1994 Legacy trans with a 1998 Forester F/R differential (4.44).
He said it is OK to share his number so you can share some information with him (570) 646-0338
I miss my SVX and would deeply appreciate the help

Has anyone called? He is waiting for some information to finish the job. Please, can SVXfiles or Nate call? Just mention my name, danny and that my car is in his shop, the white SVX. Thanks!

Re: Not again! Tick tick tick

Whoever called, thanks! Much appreciated!
Update: To get a 4.44 trans swap, all is needed is a F/R differential with a 4.44. You can use any Subaru Trans.

That's been known for awhile. However, it is not advised to swap front differentials on a Subie trans unless absolutely necessary. Even Subaru will not replace a front differential if it fails. They will require a complete transmission.

Re: Not again! Tick tick tick

The difference between svx and other suby auto's iirc is the gearing, that the svx has more clutch packs, and different tcu/valvebody. Mechanically almost the same.

The valve body is the same. The only differences between phase1 4eat's is the amount of friction discs in the clutch packs, final drive gear ratios, and physical difference in size of the tailhousing based on how many friction discs are used. Also, there are planetary gear differences in certain transmissions. Most notably, the 4.44's have taller 1st and 2nd gears in the transmission to also aid in getting the car moving quicker and with less work.

Re: Not again! Tick tick tick

I finally got my car back! The last mechanic left such a mess. He forgot the alignment pins, bolts were missing, treads were crossed, standard bolts were mixed with metric ones, and the housing was cracked. I was told that the Transmission was shot before it was installed by my mechanic anyway. The clutches were fried and it had one solenoid completely unhooked inside. I will never buy a used Transmission again! This is the final outcome: The whole transmission with the differentials were rebuilt. New clutches, transfer gears, steel plates, pump assembly, bearings, and the front axles were also replaced! All the fluids are synthetic and the exterior filter and cooler was serviced.
The Transmission shop would have put in another Trans if they knew it would take this long. I got a great Trans and they got alot of experience with our cars.

Valve body-92 Legacy
Electronics-92 Legacy
Transfer gears-92 Legacy
Converter-98 Legacy
Band and Drum-98 Legacy
Differential-98 Forester
Flexplate-03 Outback
The car drives amazing! Worth the wait. Due to the long wait, I got a break on the price- $2300
