Re: Not again! Tick tick tick

Arrggghhhhh... Just had a brand new full exhaust system put on today... and mine started ticking on the way back home from the shop.

So what's the deal here? Transmission out?

Re: Not again! Tick tick tick

If you hear the ticking after you stop the engine, then it's your exhaust cooling down. If it ticks while the engine is running, then you need to investigate more where it's coming from.

Re: Not again! Tick tick tick

The transmission shop wants $475 parts/labor to replace the flexplate, my mechanic wants $300 labor only. Should I pay the extra and know it's done right with the Trans shop? Is the price fair?

Price is pretty fair. It's 5 hours to R&R the trans, and a little more for swapping out flexplates.
Seeing as your mechanic can't even own up to his own mistake, I'd personally take it to the trans shop. And of course, be sure they put new dowels in.

Re: Not again! Tick tick tick

To pull a recently installed 4EAT out of an SVX,
replace the rear main seal,
reseal the seporator cover,
install a new gasket in the left seporator cover,
install the new flexplate,
make sure that the pins are installed,
could/should take between 5-6 hours on a lift.

No it's definitely coming from rear of engine, and in time with whatever RPM it's doing.

It's good that I've got your US-based cost as a reference. Thanks!

The only question I have now is how urgently does it need to be fixed? Is catastrophic failure about to do more damage? Or can it be driven gently in the meantime?

After it starts cracking it can "hole" the flexplate, as shown here;
http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/use...svxfiles|27762
I have seen one that ran the engine long enough to wear out the back
of the engine block!
On this one engine he now has a permanent small oil leak, that could only be properly repaired with complete dissassembly of the engine and a reseal.
On this same SVX the torque converter had to be replaced because they continued to run the engine until the locating lug on the front of the torque converter was worn away, beyond service.
Please note that this was an extreme case.

Re: Not again! Tick tick tick

Ok got it. So it's not like I have to put it on a tow truck - it's unlikely to self-destruct just driving it to a transmission specialist.

Thanks for the quick replies everyone.

The SVX that I described was the only one like that that I have ever seen.
A friend of A Network member bought it as a not running, but very clean car.
My guess is that after the flexplate "holed" they kept reving it to try and make it go
Who knew?!

Re: Not again! Tick tick tick

I finally got my SVX to a trans shop. They asked me a couple of questions about the Trans swap. Maybe someone here can help me out.
1) Are the dowels different sizes from the original trans to the Legacy trans? Do they need to be changed?
2) Is the Converter different from the original trans to the Legacy trans? Does it need to be changed?
They were asking me those questions because they can't understand why a new flex plate would crack in less than a year.
They did say my differential bearing cups are leaking and the O-rings need replacing. They were unable to remove them because they were damaged from the previous mechanic. He said they need to be cracked to be removed while the Trans is out. Does this sound correct?

Re: Not again! Tick tick tick

answers for both questions is that it's all the same. The only difference in torque converter is the stall speed. It cracked that quickly because the pins were not in place.

The dowels are the same.
And you can use an SVX torque converter with any 4EAT automatic transmission.
HOWEVER, you CAN NOT use a Legacy torque converter with a SVX transmission!

"They did say my differential bearing cups are leaking and the O-rings need replacing. They were unable to remove them because they were damaged from the previous mechanic. He said they need to be cracked to be removed while the Trans is out."
I am not sure how to respond to THAT!

Generally leaking O-Rings, in a system NOT under pressure, would only seep.
At $11.00 a quart for Mobil1 fully synthetic, it would take you 100 years to spend the money that they want for this repair.

Re: Not again! Tick tick tick

I am so ******! The trans shop called. They have my trans out and would like to see me tomorrow. They claim my car has a 1998 subaru forester trans and diff. They also said the trans and the diff is full of metal, the diff is cracked and the trans has no dowel pins! The flex plate is also cracked again! What else can go wrong! I am so
