Rear CV joint compatibility

Do you guys now if a rear CV joint from another Subaru model can be used in the SVX?

I need to replace the "long nose" visco RH CV joint with a LH one to fit the Torsen carrier.

No scrapped SVXs here to pull from.

I bought a shaft from a R160 1997 Sti - it has 22 splines against the 30 in an SVX joint and the whole joint is smaller in diameter.

How about later Legacies? Plenty of them around.....

Thanks,

Tapani

Re: Rear CV joint compatibility

I think any of the Forester Legacy and Impreza from about 97 up will work (other than the STi)

Re: Rear CV joint compatibility

Ok, thanks.

I measured the outer diameter in my -06 3.0 Outback and this is 72.4mm while the SVX is 78.1mm and the Sti is 74.0mm. The internals in the SVX joint are quite a bit larger than the STi....

Re: Rear CV joint compatibility

I ran into another issue .... found a LH SVX drive axle to swap on the RH side. I checked the grooves for the CV joint snap ring within the Quaife diff. They are way too deep for the SVX LH joints to catch.

The Quaife is marketed for all 1993-2000 Legacies and Imprezas.

This makes me think that the Legacy CVs might have longer splined sections (though the 1997 Sti shafts I looked at had the same length as the LH SVX has). If you look at the photo in the link the nose does look longer.

http://legacygt.com/forums/showthrea...html?p=3815074

You guys who have swapped to later rear diffs how have you handled this? The shafts slide into the diff ok, but the snap rings will not catch the grooves.

Anybody?

Thanks,

Tapani

Re: Rear CV joint compatibility

I['m having the exact same problem you are w/ my 04 outback diff.

It'll go in, but it doesn't want to catch. So it'll move out of the diff on occasion.

I'm sure the only thing you need to do, is swap in the correct axles that correspond w/ the diff. Hence why I'm driving a distance to meet w/ Nate to get the axles that came out of the Diff-donor car!

Re: Rear CV joint compatibility

Pls let me know how it goes. The SVX inner CV has 30 splines on the axle side. I trust there's a 22 spline version of the later joints around too. There's some doubt if the outer joint fits the SVX knuckle. When are you going to get the 04 axles? Thanks in advance, Tapani

Re: Rear CV joint compatibility

Great ! Enjoy the Easter time, all of you ! We had an egg hunt today :-). Tapani

- edit: Check out the outer CV joint in the link. The number and diameter of the splines into the hub and the diameter of the seal surface on the outer CV joint matches SVX, but the inner spline count is 22 with an option of 30 (SVX). http://www.importcarparts.co.uk/part...en=&searchKey=

Re: Rear CV joint compatibility

The inner end should look like this, I believe.

http://www.driveshaftshop.com/subaru...p-axle-hub-kit
Product Description

The 900HP Level 5 kit for the GD Impreza WRX (R160 Rear) is a complete rear system including both axles, hubs and ARP extended studs. The axles feature our our aerospace grade torsional 32 spline axle bars, increased from the factory 29 spline bars, and a billet ball & cage inner cv with our high grade inner differential spline for the R160 differential, and a proprietary outer CV with a larger spline. The hubs are made to accomodate the larger spline and are also able to accept the factory ABS ring. Rated to 900HP with a 1-year warranty.

Please Note: This set of axles is for the R160 differential only, if you are using the R180 differential see part # SU46

Part Number: SU45
I trust the reference to 29 splines (shaft bar itself) instead of the 30 I counted means the same - you either count the highs or the lows in either the shaft or the DOJ.

Note also that the groove for the clip is shallow and rounded. The circlip shall stay in the side gear and not come out with the shaft (just like the RH side in a VLSD in the SVX). Do not force two circlips in .

I trust there was a thread about this too.

Re: Rear CV joint compatibility

There is actually a TSB strictly for the circlips
I'll try to post it next time I find it.

Re: Rear CV joint compatibility

Yeah, and it's in the manual too. Do not try to remove it from the LSD carrier .

Still - I got a break thru .

The Quaife guys are smarter than me. I've been concentrating solely on the RH side. There are actually two sets of grooves on both sides. The LH side snaps very nicely in place in the first groove. The second one is maybe 5-6 mm deeper - this is for the later axles.

On the RH side there are two grooves also. The first one sits much closer, right where the the shallow groove is on the VLSD RH shaft. All you need to do is to cut off the nose which goes into the viscous unit, insert a circlip inside the Torsen carrier - in the first groove - smack in the shaft and you're done. On the RH side there's no groove at the SVX LH location, but the deeper one for the later shaft is at the same depth than on the LH side.

Both sides are secured and sit exactly where they should.

The only glitch is the minimalist instructions which follow the (rather high priced) unit: "Follow OEM instructions".

Oh well, I now have a spare LH shaft I found in Sweden and I'm getting pretty good at dismantling the joints, removing and installing the diff.
