Re: Help me plan my exhaust repair/upgrade please?

I originally used these resonators as pre-cats on my 96 (OBDII). The emissions standards were stricter and I had to change them over to small Magnaflow high-flow pre-cats to avoid a CEL. .

Re: Help me plan my exhaust repair/upgrade please?
From the looks of it then, the AR25 2.5" resonators would fit as well. And they are cheaper than the 20 from what I've found
So I gather from your photos, if I were to use the AR25 as a precat, I would have to fab up a flanged pipe from the header to the resonator, then into the main cat. from there, out to 2 pipes into the glass packs, then stock tips welded onto the cherry bomb. Sound about right? |

Re: Help me plan my exhaust repair/upgrade please?
John, how much did your exhaust cost? The previous owner on mine put in an aftermarket resonator and it has developed a huge crack where it meets back to the pipe, and I'm tired of patching it up every 3 months. I want it to sound stock, but my college wallet doesn't leave much room for my expensive taste. Yours is shiny.

You also need that same 2 " pipe that exits the AR20's to go into the new Magnaflow main cat. Look in svxfiles locker HERE These are photos of the exhaust system he did on Harry Newman's "newsvx" 1992 pearlie. It is basically the exact same exhaust that I have from the main cat forward. Start at photo 40. .

Re: Help me plan my exhaust repair/upgrade please?
Thanks for all the input, info, and help guys I think I have it figured out. Going to keep the pre cats (planning to move out west, so just in case I want to keep it stock looking as much as possible), run an AR20 or AR25 resonator in place of the stock resonator, into the 94007 cat, stick a y pipe behind the cat, and run directly to the 12" glass packs. Cheapest and easiest way I can think of doing it, and easily modified later on for the down pipes. I do plan to gut the pre cat's though for the moment. I'll try and post some pics next week after I get it finished

Re: Help me plan my exhaust repair/upgrade please?
careful about moving the cat any farther away from the engine then it already is (especially if you gut your pre-cats) because the farther it is and cooler it is the less it will work. you may end up having to monkey with your car to pass emissions.

Re: Help me plan my exhaust repair/upgrade please?
Yup. Planning to keep the cat as close to stock location as possible. As far as emissions goes, since the car is pre OBDII, its only a visual inspection. As long as the emissions stuff looks to be there, it'll pass Granted, that may change when I go west to Oregon, but that won't be for some time yet.

Re: Help me plan my exhaust repair/upgrade please?
OK, so for a small update:
Slight modification to the plan. Resonator is getting tacked in 2-3" back from the cat. from there it will run back and split off of a Y pipe, where it will come back and bend 45 degrees opposite each other (on each side of the Y) and the 12" cherry bombs will be tacked in about 3-4" from where the stock tips come out. An adapter will be fabbed for 2.5" to 1.75" to fit the stock tips. Transverse/crossflow muffler will be removed and scrapped. Pre cats will be gutted. Eventually the down pipes will be replaced with 2", with the pre cats being replaced either with an AR20 resonator, or 2 new high flow pre cats (undecided yet, and have to do some research on it first, due to emissions requirements here). AFAIK, it is possible to do the pre cats with AR20s here (at least as far as the one shop owner told me), so that may be the plan (Thanks Tom and svxcess ). Parts list and price is TBD once I get it welded up. Will include measurements and bends (and if I can get a cad file from the bender I will post it too ) for anyone else who would like to duplicate. Planning for later in the week to have it done, depending on which shop I go with. Best estimate for labor so far has been $225 with "a good possibility of being less than that." Estimating 8ft of 2.5" aluminized exhaust tubing overall being invested in this project. I have to check with one more guy tomorrow on price, he wants to have a look at the car. Personally I'd rather go to him, given his resume (check out http://www.mercenary-mechanic.com/Site/Experience.html, thats the guy) but we shall see. My normal "cheap" guy got rid of his bender :wtf: Last edited by DiabloScoobyru; 04-02-2012 at 07:30 PM. |
