Smile Made some guy's day

This weekend I enlisted the help of my good friend in picking up some items from Ikea. I needed a desk, chair, and dresser and there was no way of cramming all that stuff into the back of the SVX, or my girlfriend's Integra. Lucky for me my buddy drives the all time greatest utility vehicle: a 1984 BRAT.

So we were driving back across town in tandem on the 101 freeway, cruising slowly in the second lane so I didn't loose the puttery ol' 4 -banger when a '06 STI pulled up next to me. This guy had modded the heck out of his car; slammed to the ground, front mount intercooler, splitters, etc. He was smiling from ear to ear, giving me a thumbs up. He then slowed to pace my friend in the BRAT for a while, then got in line behind us. We traveled as a pack with traffic zooming past us all the way to our exit at Topanga Canyon Blvd. We pulled off at the gas station at the top of the canyon, and got out to look at each other's cars and he said that he was only headed to Century City, about 10 miles back on the highway, but he wanted to cruise for a while. Be bid each other farewell, and he got back on the freeway going back the other direction.

I sometimes feel like newer Subaru owners here in CA don't even know there's models prior to the 2000 WRX, and seldom relate their cars to older generations. But this guy was all about the heritage. I'm thinking back to a couple years ago, it would've made my day too seeing an SVX and a BRAT at the same time in LA.

Camraderie - It's what makes a Subaru a Subaru.

Re: Made some guy's day

Thaats a cool story, I had almost the same thing happen to me on the freeway with some1 in a STI. Its nice to see people owning a New Subaru recognize the older SVX's. It always makes my day.

Re: Made some guy's day

Ya i find it sad that most people who are in suby clubs dont know what an SVX is or recognise it. One night i had to find a place to get super glue and the nearest place was a grocery store and there was a little car meet in the parking lot and i heard one guy say, " what is that?" and nother guy say " its a subaru" i was surprised the other guy knew lol.

Re: Made some guy's day

look at my signature, you can find them all in my drive at the same time. But the all time best Brat was 1985. It got the Hydro lifter motor that year, and was the last year for jumpseats.......best of both worlds. Mine sports a cyclops light from the 82.

Back on topic, way to go to make the day. Sounds like a fun time. Glad you got into old school for once.

That sounds like the ultimate BRAT. Sadly my friend's '84 sports a CA only carb, and the jump seats were removed by the previous owner. But still, a butchered BRAT is better than no BRAT at all. Some day I'll get one for hauling, an RX for rallying, the the SVX for hwy. All that fun for the cost of 1 WRX? It doesn't get any better than that.

Re: Made some guy's day

Good Story, Its good to see people appreciate such an amazing build in the SVX. I stopped the other day to help some guys out that were broken down. they overheated and i had extra coolant in the trunk. When I stopped, they almost forgot their car was broken down with all the questions about mine. Its a great feeling!!

Re: Made some guy's day

Nice history, i like it when people appreciate the good things of life.
The other day two young guys around 18 came to my shop, and i asked them what they needed, they said, "we were told that an SVX is here, we just came to see it".That is GooooD

Re: Made some guy's day

Just this afternoon, I went up to the big shopping center in the hills north of my house to pick up the monthly bag of dog food from Petco. As I got out of my car in the lot, I noticed a couple eyeing it. The guy came over and said, "You don't see many of those these days." Yes, he knew what it was, and we chatted about the SVX for a minute or two before his wife pulled him into a store. So there are people around, even in Subaru-thin So Cal, who know the car. They're just few and far between.
