I working on removing the transmission in my driveway I'm not sure if it come out the top or if you can drop it out the bottom is there a trick to disconnecting the drive shaft?

OOOHHH snaaap.....Unless your engine is out or you have no floor pan in your car, I would "drop" tranny from bottom....use some PB blaster to loosen bolts on driveshaft. Shaft in back of tranny is splined and u just pull it out Good Luck

This is going to be tricky to do in a driveway. The unit is heavy, about 150 lbs or so. Be careful.

Its heavier than that. And I almost did it in my driveway. The alignment dowels on mine were siezed and that's the only reason I wasn't able to complete it on my own.

Drop it out the bottom unless you have a reason to take the engine out as well. That's the only reason to take it out the top.

1) Good for you!
2) The bottom would be MUCH better!
3) Unbolt the four 12mm flange bolts, the two 14mm center bearing bolts, and pull the driveshaft out of the way.

Good luck with your project.

PS, There is a how too in my signature,.

Re: tranny up or down?

ya trust me drop it from the bottom, unfortunately here's the bad news.
The tranny (weighs 250lbs... i weighed it) is friggen tall cause of the bellhousing. your gonna have to need blocks for the jackstands if you are using tranny jack to help get it out, if you wanna just drop it out of the car and not care about it, your fine with regular height of a 3ton jackstand.

To take the tranny out you'll need to disconnect the exhause from where the precats meet the header to the ypipe cat, that will give you enough room to work with,
The driveshaft luckily is a 2 piece so you can disconnect it after the bearing.
the axel pins... be careful you can mushroom them in there. my preference is using a robertson screw driver and a hammer. but make sure to have the wheels on the ground b4 you take off the axel nuts unless you have someone to step on the brake for you.

And dont repeat my mistake of taking the tranny out while having the TC still bolted on. its a nightmare.

I think thats all the advice i can give other than to be careful and dont crush yourself.

oh, draning the transmission fluid will help a bit with the weight i guess.

Re: tranny up or down?

Robertson drivers have a reduced tip that would slip into the center of the roll pin, but after doing numberous CV joints and mechanical work for years I perfer the plain old Roll pin punch.. some you can get with a little nipple in the end, but just choose the punch so it barely fits in the hole.( the large hole in the CV joint, not the hole in the roll pin!) if i remember it's 3/16 or something like that.

Re: tranny up or down?

The Robertson is the best screw driver ever invented. By a Canadian too eh?
It's a square tip which comes in different sizes and fits very tightly and precisely into the matching screw. Once on the end of the bit you can turn it sideways, shake it or whatever and it will not fall off the end of the screwdriver. The heads are very difficult to strip also.

ya you prolly know it as a square head. i only suggested it since its prolly something more common to have laying around than like a 3/11" punch laying around

Re: tranny up or down?

Whatever you do, DON'T jam a screwdriver up into the center of the roll (axle) pin like I did. It will complicate your life in ways you can't even imagine. Use the right size punch or something comparable.
