Re: Cash For Clunkers.....Figured Out!!!
I don't suppose it has occurred to anyone that the reason this huge saving in oil use only represents 1/4 day of total USA oil use could be because maybe the USA uses too much oil per capita on a day to day basis? No? Nobody over there sees it that way?
The way I sees it, Joe, is that you guys got buses & trolleys that actually run on time. AND, if you miss the bus, you can call the missus, apologize, & then amble over to the corner pub for a few pints. Crawling home can save a few pints o' oil. So........save the planet - drink more beer! Ron.

Re: Cash For Clunkers.....Figured Out!!!
Just ran into this thread. Ah the complainers!
As if getting P.O.S's off the road is a bad thing. Instead of giving people an incentive to trade their cars in for newer ones to help our environment, lets support them to keep 'clunkers' out there. It can't be all that bad if we don't do anything about our environment now and help our children and children's children live in a better environment. Right!?

I would hardly put the SVX in the same category as a full-size Dodge Ram van P.O.S. Perhaps those SHOULD be retired, but I shouldn't be paying for it. Especially if it hurts my business, as well. Where is my handout when I can't pay my mortgage and can't find a decent used car to buy at a reasonable price because they have all been destroyed? P.S. How many of those "P.O.S."s in your signature are you willing to destroy to save your children's environment?

Re: Cash For Clunkers.....Figured Out!!!
What happened to the tune ups and inflating tires to the correct pressure? I thought that would take care of our dependency on oil.

3billion in renovating some major roadways to reduce major congestion would be more of a long term plan to reduce emmissions than try to coax people into buying new cars they cannot really afford and will soon be repossessed. Then again, it doesn't look like our current government officials really give a rats ass about long term with how fast they are piling up our national deficit. I understand the concern for cleaner vehicles, but lets make sure they will be able to actually operate cleaner first Mike and I had a small debate about this a little while ago. It is the HUGE gas guzzles like the H2 and the moving zip code Ford Excursion that are really crushing out the pollutants. Maybe change the classing of these vehicles to require a CDL to operate. This way a soccer mom with 1 kid might buy a minivan instead of a land yacht. Tom Last edited by TomsSVX; 09-27-2009 at 10:17 AM. |

I am not just angered that Big Brother LIED about our gas mileage! (Our SVXi get 18-20 MPG around town with spirited driving.) Why did'nt we take that $5-6 BILLION and invest in say, solar pannels on the roofs of schools. They are usually flat unobstructed places. During the school year the pannels lower OUR electric bills, and in the summer they would send free electricty back into the grid! And how about rather than crushing those clunker minivans, put them in a park outside of citys for homeless people to live in untill they return to society.

Re: Cash For Clunkers.....Figured Out!!!
Here is an article from Autoblog some pretty rare and/or potentially valuable cars that have been taken in by this program. Its interestingly sad to note that it seems they pegged 123 SVXs among them. However, one glimmer of hope seems to be the actual Cash for Clunkers program only calls for the engines to be disabled, the salvage yard just needs to prove they crushed the chassis and engine.

Re: Cash For Clunkers.....Figured Out!!!
I swore I would stay out of this, but I just can't resist.
Quote:
I bought my SVX a little over a year ago for $3200. I've put about another 2.5k into it repairing what was needed, and adding the aminities that even this focus doesn't include. My car is reliable, comfortable, attractive and all mine. I make my payments (repairs/upgrades) on my schedule, and the car just keeps getting better. It's flex-fuel thus reducing our dependence on oil, and it drives much better than the focus. What does this prove? That CFC was not about saving the environment because as was already discussed that new focus has already created more carbon during manufacture than my car will for the rest of it's life. It's not about lowering our dependence on oil, because if we were really serious about that we'd actually have high MPG cars available here like the rest of the world and we'd be retrofitting our older cars to run on alternative sources. This isn't about stimulating the economy because taking $3156/year out of the pockets of consumers will do no such thing. It isn't even about stimulating the domestic economy because most of the cars traded in were American cars with American mechanics keeping them running while Hondas, Toyotas, etc were the most purchased. If anyone truly has Cash For Clunkers figured out, please let me know because this scam just looks bad from every perspective. In 72 months if I've spent $15995 on my SVX, it'll be the meanest car you'll ever see. That money will be going to folks here on the forum, and local mechanics. It'll drive comparable to cars worth 4-5 times that much, and I won't owe a penny. Let's talk to those focus owners in 6 years and see how happy they are with their "investment".

Re: Cash For Clunkers.....Figured Out!!!
I can attest to the fact that in Utah, cash for clunkers cars are sent to wrecking yards with only the engines disabled (run with sodium silicate or something til they seize). I just bought an SVX tranny from a CfC car with less than 30k miles on a full rebuild (so said the previous owner) for about $100 from the local U-pull yard.
Now if I use said tranny to reactivate an SVX that's been off the road with trans problems (which I might do) then there's been nothing gained, right? One SVX out of commission, one back in service. I didn't cry too much for the SVX that I pulled it from, as it had over 200k on it and needed paint badly. I would have given $500- $1000 for it as a parts car, but I can't compete with the $3500- $4500 the owner got for it in the CfC program. |
